since we are prepping for another ice storm here, I've been doin some research on small details for the build... Kyped a few stills from the S&S intro and a coupla episodes. Here are some of the details I picked out to be included in the build
in this pic you can see the spare tire mounted on the passenger side... and a brace going from the rear running board to the top of the bed rail. these things will definitely be on the build
Outta this pic, the sign (a definite necessity) and the hinges that protrude out. The curved doorskin will be easy to do, just roll up a piece of sheet, then pull it back out straight. It's the inside struts that are gonna be a pain. Weight is gonna be an issue, with the 14 gauge fenders, so the door skins will probably be 22 gauge, with wooden supports.
because of the one piece nature of the fenders/ grille shown in this pic, I think I'll make the whole front end one piece, hinged at the front, so it tilts forward like a tractor trailer rig does. I think this will make serviceing that big ole onan a little easier. The "Hood" section will be made by splitting one of the MTD hoods down the middle, and filling the center with the extra one I found.
I'm gonna use as much of the MTD running boards as possible to make up the running boards on the red fox

i cant wait to see it done, i love the truck, closest ill get to owning one is a hotwheels. I like that you putting your ideas up in detail.
As an ex professional fabricator/mechanic, the build itself is the easy part. Once I apply hammer and fire to the steel, things will move along quickly. Since I've had a lot of distractions here lately, I'm taking my time and figuring out what to use where, and the strongest way to construct what I want. I AM in this for the competition, but I'm not stressing about the deadline... I'll either be done or I wont.... Doing this right is more important than doing this fast. I WILL, however, have one of the most unique rigs our there, and Y'all will get to see it built!

Well, My birthday "work on the tractor day" was a wash, ..... quite literally. It rained most of the day and got cold. So wifey, the sweetheart what she is, gimme today to work on it, shoving all other fires on the farm aside. What that means, is tonight you should have the long awaited potato 9000 camera video update! It occurred to me that I haven't shown y'all the engine I'm putting in red fox, and I'll get some vid of the 18 HP that I'm giving to moose. I'll be tearing both engines completely down, cleaning and inspecting as I go, so I'll try to give you guys the highlights of the Onan rebuild... there aren't a lot of 20 HP opposed onan rebuilds out there on You Tube right now.

They may make me run with the deuces... It'll be nearly 8 foot bumper to bumper... maybe 9. I'm using 3 x 4 I beam (2 of em) for frame rails. Add spring packs and solid axles front and back and it's gonna be heavy. Having to work out just exactly where the motor has to be positioned to fit the ford 4 speed tranny and bellhousing. Using your 18 HP for mock up, it's lighter to lift on and off (plus I ain't separated the onan from the genset yet)
I have a mock up in progress to get an idea of seating, controls, motor tranny position, etc.
Vid to follow

well it's 2:00 am and I just woke up from the nap I took at 5 pm yesterday! I spent a good portion of yesterday finishing the disassembly and mocking up everything. Got some vid that I'll get posted up come daylight or so. Thanks for the birthday wishes fella's. I have to say, even without the sheetmetal, the mockup is looking really promising!
and Stretch,

Son, you gotta quit listening to dem voices in yer head... they'll steer ya wrong every time!
I'm shooting for tough and reliable, not high performance.... yet (grin)
I have to make a run to Sumter next week, so I may be able to pick up that 2000 cc flat 4 Vdub engine I have at a buddies house for later transplant (after the competition)

Ought to be a pretty nifty machine to haul junk around in. How do you think you will attach the onan to the transmission? I guess you didn't take it apart yet of course, but any ideas?
Hmm... I can see what your going after now. It's not going to be like anything else here. Way bigger than I imagined, but with what parts you have, should look pretty good, and well proportioned. Actually, it's kinda of like my old cj-2a jeep in size, but longer. Heck, you might be able to make it street legal.
I like the idea of golf cart axle and big transmission. Once you get it set up and tweaked, should be bulletproof.
Don't think you'll be tackling the rougher trails with it, and it may take two or three of us to pull you our if you get stuck!
Mr mod.... I'll be machining a hub with a tapered socket to fit the onan shaft... flywheel will bolt to the hub. I'll make an adapter plate from 1/4 inch steel to bolt the bell housing to
Stretch, Yeah, I aint sure I'll be able to pull off the tougher trails either, but who knows... Bein sprung on all fours and If I can lock that golf cart axle, it'll help. What it WILL be good for, is an anchor point to pull YOU guys out... I can drive up close, and you guys can hook the winch to ME lol. Rollin anchor!
The onan is not only physically larger, the internals are a large and heavy as an automobile engine's internals. that 20 hp rating is deceptive... the torque of these guys is pretty impressive. I may very well, in the coming years, transplant a VW 2000cc pancake engine in and register it.
