I'm seing this as a good idea if you have a lifted mower with springs or shocks.
Then a Push / Pull wire system would do the trick for you.
Thus eliminating the need for the solid shift rod.

Yep. I often use cable actuation where others use linkages, such as clutches and brakes. You can either use a heavy Morse cable for push-pull, or two standard cables for pull-pull. I get automotive parking brake cables from my favourite surplus store.
