I have never owned a kohler so I can't say. Usually you have to remove some of the sheetmetal off the engine to get the plastic gear guard off. You will probably have to do this anyway though, regardless of that the problem is, you'll need to get in there and take a look.

it turned out to be the brushes...i am getting a new starter
lol yeah new starter is a good idea, A while back i replaced brushes on a motor, it was the most fidderley annoying thing i have ever done!! how old is the engine?? seams weird that the brushes would go...
