Greetings to all. Looking for a bit of intel from the members. I have a CV730 in a Craftsman DYT4000 which is used at the barn for toting around the dump cart and some light plowing only. A strong engine for this machine however, it's surging at high RPM whether sitting idle or while in operation. I went through the carb soup to nuts early last Spring for a similar issue and it's been ok until about mid Fall when it started again Soo, it's been dry docked here in my garage since while undergoing a few much needed resto mods (are there ever just "a few" LOL) and this is the next step in the process. Perhaps my "usual suspects" list doesn't include the true culprit(s). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance . . .
What shape is your governor spring in? Does it have a governor adjustment screw like some engines do? If not you could try resetting your governor arm to stock to see if it helps, if not the only other thing I can think of (aside from something up internally) is that the air/fuel mixture is off, that can cause surging.
Probably need to clean the carb again, any emulsion tubes. Even if it was ran dry, insects, rodents and just general dust can possibly get in there. Putting fresh gas in can stir up sediment. Heck a fiber fuel filter, can break down over time and clog jets.

I had a nearly identical problem on a craftsman with a kohler CV V-twin, scratched my head trying to clean the carburetor too. I ordered a chinese replacement carb from amazon and that fixed it.
You need to have a certain amount of posts before you can post a photo, 10 I believe?
I thought it was so long before a link? I'll look.
might check out that howto in my signature below for images.
EDIT: I found the policy.
"Unauthorize members with less than a week registration to post external links and emails." Should be able to attach an image via the upload image button. Probably can't link to one.

I'll try it this way. B'nator, the spring's in great shape and I set the arm to the "stock" position when I worked on it last season. N'blue, I haven't dropped the bowl however, unless it is a mixture adjustment I'll have to go the Mighty route and pull the carb to go through it again. Thought I had the mix set right last time by ear but didn't have a reference (in all the way / back out "X" number of turns) to go by and still don't. Crazy . . . yours may be an option with this as well depending on what I run short of first . . . parts cleaner or patience LOL.
I'd do as @MightyRaze suggested then. In case you didn't know, white vinegar is an excellent cleaner just don't soak the parts for TOO long (about 30 minutes is good) and make sure you've removed all gaskets and or rubber bits and pieces. Hopefully a thorough cleaning will sort out it for you! It looks like it has a fuel pump built into the side of the carb too eh?
Chose the 19" 003's for this. Not really impressive for control when plowing but they're perfect at the barn, quite literally "All Terrain". Just had to trim a few inches from the lower edges of the hood for them to clear. Fine by me though, this ain't headed to MECUM any time soon! Hi Run chevrons in back and just swap them with the chained turfs for snow & ice until I have more time to spend on these track prototypes here collecting dust . . .
Hello again. Would anyone have a "general rule of thumb" air/fuel screw setting for this Kohler? It's a Keihin 053 . . . searched for over half an hour and can't locate anything specific . . .
Hey T'Chicken. I crossed my fingers a did just that. Started at fully seated at low idle and backed out a quarter up to two and a half turns . . . no noticeable difference. Did the same at mid and then full throttle . . . no noticeable difference.
