Apparently, my computer just had some sort of weird aneurism. It looked like my last entry double-posted- so I deleted one and they both went away. Aargh. So, again-

Time to put the Ka-Pow on Boss Hoss. Built a wicked custom muffler for this thang, Gatling gun style. The basics are: a 2 1/2lb fire extingusher, some 1" EMT (electrical conduit) and some 1/2" EMT, and some assorted bits and pieces. The name Boss Hoss kept bringing me images of the wild west, gangstas, and guns. I was originally gonna build an exhaust ust like the one I did for CentsLess but with the ports up front. That turned into directing the exhaust stream straight foreward instead of off to the side, which led to a gun notion, and of course, that wasn't good enough, either. Long story short, Gatling gun!
Looks neat, sounds cool, and gives a great visual with the smoke.

That grid heater is pretty cool. Wouldn't mind one for a oppy, lol. Is that hood latch spring loaded too? I dont recall you discussing it, it's a cool little piece.

Have you decided on a paint scheme for the gat-fler? Also maybe make the air box look like an ammo-mag to feed the gat.

Ok, it's time for another progress update!
I can't hardly get anything done with this heat. GAH!

What I DID do, was build the new air intake system. In keeping with the quasi-military theme that seemed to stem from the gatling gun muffler, I was looking for ideas for the air intake system. The criteria was pretty simple. The end result had to be air and water tight, to the inlet, which was to be a snorkel of some kind. The filter had to remain protected from immediate element infiltration, namely water and mud. Basically, they system design could not allow for the filter to get wet or muddy, because that would severely impair performance. Whether rain, deep water, or splashing- nothing could hit the filter.
A viewer suggested that an ammunition can could be a good look to go with the gun, and I went with that.
Keeping words minimal, I managed to re-use a stock filter and the air cleaner base, housed within a surplus .50cal ammo can.
From there, I adapted on a piece of pipe (harvested from the remains of the stock muffler, and made a trip to my local plumbing department. A 1 1/2" ABS trap adapter, a 90, an ABS nipple, a reducer, and a grate came together to make a no-tools-to-attach/release air intake tube tucked under the dash and away from the elements. The grate in the end of the tube will keep varmints out, same as I did on Commando. Oh, I also painted the muffler. Pics and video:

Nice work on the exhaust and air filter system. I like the exhaust, very unique and looks great painted.

That's a tad large for my tastes but it's definitively a well executed and functional.   You put a lot of effort into keeping the element dry.

I was hoping to get away with the smaller one, myself. Unfortunately, it just couldn't happen, and there are only so many available choices. Basically, it's what I had to do.

The writing on the side of the ammo box is just killer, LOL.

I agree with Carl, but im sure it will be practical in the mud.

So Doc has talked about going to Haspin before.  Say, next year things fall into place and he can go.  Decides to take Boss Hoss because of it's Mud Assault capabilities.

(Border control) Uh.... Mr. Smith.  Can you explain the Assault vehicle you have in tow?

I can just imagine where it would go from there.  LOL

After a bit of a dry spell, progress continues. Built the throttle setup using a factory style cast iron pedal, a random spring, a couple heim joints, some steel tube, a bicycle brake cable, and a 15mm socket... LOL

The basic premise as we all know, is that these little diesels are designed to have the throttle set in place during operation, and use a complete return to zero to stop fuel flow and shut down. What this means is, there's no "idle position" for the throttle. If you set a minimum idle position, there is no shutdown. On Diesel Weasel, I got around this by setting the minimum idle on the throttle and using the compression release as a kill system.

We've all seen the dual cable setup Fearless Front used to address this, and it works, but it's not for me, this time. I wanted something a bit heavier duty, and a little more old school. I decided a linkage was the answer for the pedal, and a cable for the idle/kill problem.

I built a linkage running from a pedal to the throttle plate for foot duty. Pushing the pedal, pushes a rod forward, and a bell-crank changes the direction of push from forewards to upwards. A second rod (topped with a 15mm socket as a cup) pushes the cable block up to increase throttle. A twist lock pull handle in the dash allows you to set minimum throttle for idle, or a complete return to zero for kill- With the added bonus of allowing you to set the throttle ANYWHERE between zero and full speed for cruise control, high idle fast charging, etc. The hand throttle overrides whatever position the pedal is in.

Love your non-cable implementation for the foot throttle.

I'm really impressed with the ingenuity here!  I like how the linkage is more rugged than a cable.

Super cool setup! At least you'll always know where the 15mm socket is when you can't find it, hahaha. Love how you used an actual Wheel Horse pedal too, that's pretty slick.

Well, guys-
I'm officially tossing in the towel. I basically admitted it to myself awhile ago, but I was secretly holding out hope that a miracle would happen, and I'd get a stunt double or something.
Nope.
It just wasn't in the cards.
The Boss Hoss project will continue as time allows, but not in this contest.
Good luck to all the finishing participants, it's gonna be a tough vote.

That's too bad @Doc Sprocket. I had really hoped all you needed to do was slap a belt on it to at least be considered complete.
