Best idea I could think of.

And it worked!

Should I sand the rust off?  It seems like it would help the belt get traction, but it also seems like it would wear it down prematurely. Thoughts?

So, I have $90 into this. Tires aside, I only need about $20 worth of parts.  So, should I get one of These instead of cutting the keyway myself?

I would get it, but this is turning into a "See how little I can spend on this" build.

Try if u can fit a pulley without problems , if not, buy this sucker or wish it you to christmas or birthday
Well, this is the build off, both Christmas and my bday are after it ends, lol.
I've done some thinking.  I think if I'm going to have a machine shop do it, it'd cost a good $30-$40, plus the $15 in diesel it takes every time we take the truck to town, plus the replacement gaskets and whatnot after I take the shaft out.  Then, there's the fact that I've never taken a flywheel off or a crankcase apart, and the huge chance (being ME) that I'm going to screw it up.
I think I'm either going to buy that adapter or cut the keyway myself.

Get the adapter.  That's a rare find not bad of a price considering the labor and headache it could save you.

Wire wheel or sand off the rust from the pulleys.  Doesn't have to be perfect, the belt will do the rest.

@Crazy_Carl Can you calculate the speeds in all 4 gears with a 3" engine pulley and a 10" rear pulley, 27" tires with an engine spinning at 3600 RPM leaving the vari-drive out (I'll explain later) using these trans ratios?

3" engine pulley, 10" trans pulley?  That's a huge reduction.  I hope you don't plan on driving too far from the house

That's more reduction than most stock tractors looool. You can afford to go 1:1 on this thing and still have plenty of power

Okay, so the first option is perfect. The reason why I said that is it all pivots off the vari drive. When the vari-drive is in the middle position, there is no reduction or induction.  When it is in the fastest position it is a 1-2, doubling the speed.  In the lowest position, it is a 2-1, cutting the speed in half. Meaning my top speed will be about 8 MPH, which I'm fine with, and the lowest speed will be 0.2 mph at full throttle. Basically a torque monster. LOL

Why keep the vari drive though. It's just gonna provoke belt slip and be another factor to fail.

So I can have the advantages I listed above. I've been told that it only slips in mud or water. We shall see, if it slips under heavy loads, I will rip it out.
Meantime, I just spent all afternoon restoring it, installing it, and adjusting it, and I'm going to at LEAST try it after all that work, lol.

do you got v-belt dressing? if not get some at an auto parts store, basically you spray your belt down with it, its absorbs it, and it makes it sticky, water slowly washes it away, but it shold get you threw a day if playing in the mud. i always keep a can... even used it on my vacuum once.

WTF, your JD will be really slow! way too slow in my opinion. Yeah, try the varidrive, I like the Varidrive on my MTD, cuz you can choose how fast the input pulley should spin, only problem is, it likes it to slip on the engine pulley. I would recommend to choose a bigger engine pulley
Well, what I may do, is since I have the 3" pulley already, I'll use that when I am going to pulling contests or something, and then get a 6" pulley for when I am driving around or doing minor pulling with it. Should be able to go near 18 mph, which will be fine given the high center of gravity.

Huh, never heard of that before. That sounds like a great idea, I live in Texas, we have no mud to play in, lol. I'll get some of that and try it out.

So, all I need to get the diesel to start (in theory) is oil and drain plugs. Hope to get them when I go into town next. Then I will mount the engine and try to pull start it off of WD40, and if it starts briefly, I will mount the fuel tank and get fuel line, and some diesel fuel, and actually run it for a few minutes. Then, after that, I will order that adapter, then throw a pulley and a belt on, then from there, the axles will be able to turn under their own power. After that, all I need is throttle and tires. And then she will be ready for a test drive!!!!! This build is actually progressing quite fast, lol.

@muckmudd can you send me a PM of the build in your profile pic? i want to see that front end in more detail. also 18mph max is a good thing if you want to still to work, some times you need slow. i had to change they way i ride with dinky because its to fast in 1st gear to do some really sketchy stuff.

Be careful about the high center of gravity at 18 mph.  Ol red was really tippy at 12 mph before I put on the rear wheel spacers.

I think the weight of that rig would keep him planted. If he even gets up to that speed.

all season windows washer fluid is a great way to keep them wheels down on the ground. the ford wheelsers tiers will get that after the bead has had a good amount of time to get stuck.

Well, this is still an idea, not sure if that's what I'm going with or not yet.

Probably. And yes rich, with the ratio it would have, it could get up that fast.

If all goes as planned, I should be trying to start this baby up tomorrow, and I should be doing it on live stream. If I am streaming it, I'll update this thread with more info.
