MTD off-road build (Mobile Terrain Dominator) "1"

Here are a couple pictures of my fuel tank all mounted up.

I can bounce the suspension by the tank, not that I need to but its nice to know I can, hahaha. Let me know what ya think!

I've also recently been giving some thought to locking the differential in the ol' 600. It does pretty well without positive traction as it is, but now I'm thinking that I wouldn't mind having posi' haha. I could just weld the spider bevel gears to the pin, but I kinda wanna come up with my own method. Hmmm... I'll think about it for a while and see if I can cone up with anything hahaha.

Just giver the ol' fozzy! Easiest way to do it! I wholeheartedly support it!

Could do both!! That'll get the job done! Hahaha, ah we'll see which method I end up using I guess.

I welded the spider gears that hold the axles to the pinion carrier so I could still replace the axles if they break.

I was wondering about doing that, then you could just pop the snaprings off and slide the axle out like you said. Wouldn't be hard to get even penetration on the carrier and the gears I wouldn't think. I really wish there was an easy way to make a selectable locker for one of these transaxles hahaha.

I wasnt sure whether to post these in the rat rod thread or this one, but whatever hahaha.

I got my belt issues sorted out with the MTD, so it shouldn't ever fall off again! Which makes me very happy, hahaha. I have to make an axle locator though cuz the axle moves side to side quite a bit, which is no surprise. Either way I'm pretty happy that I finally got that cured with the belt and all. Let me know what ya think!

I wouldn't get too crazy with MTD until you fix up the axle.

Thanks mighty! Yeah I've just been screwing around with 'er a bit to make sure the belt doesnt want to pop off, nothing too wild.

Hahaha, so this weekend I'm thinking about fabbing up a simple axle locator. I wanna go for a nice trail ride this weekend and I dont want my axle to walk, so I figured I should think something up.

Heres what I'm thinkin'



This is what I wanted to do back when I had the coil overs because I couldnt really fit a panhard bar between them. This should work great for my current setup and it shouldnt limit my flex at all. It shouldnt be hard to fab up either so hopefully I'll be romping in no time!

Well I got my locator done so far!











It works great and the horizontal piece on the bottom limits the axle from drooping too far, which is nice.

So I went crawling over some stuff, aaaannd...





The coils keep falling out haha.

I figured I should make some sort of retainers for them so it doesnt keep happening. I just made little tabs that bolt the coils down in the lower buckets.







I'm probably gonna have to make something for the uppers as well, but we'll see. Probably just some straps or something. Let me know what ya think!

I was thinking, do you think there will need to be some kind of bracing for the locator for side to side bending?

I was wondering about that as well, but after the abuse I put it through once I was finished the locator and the coil tabs, it hasnt bent a bit so I think it'll be alright.

I know sometimes a picture doesn't tell us how strong a piece of metal is. Looks good!

Well I rigged up some simple upper coil retainers, theyre just little hooks that grab on to the top off the buckets and the underside of the coils. So when the coils stretch the hook have tension on them and keep the coils in their buckets.

The coil retainers work good enough that the one wheel will come off the ground if it flexes too much, which means I dont habe to worry about over flexing it. Im pretty satisfyed with this setup now, so I guess its time to move on to the next crazy idea, hahaha. Let me know what ya think!

I kept having trouble with my left lower coil retainer today, it would turn and jam in the coil but it wouldnt hold the coil in...

Then once I relized I had been putting it backwards the problem seemed to subside hahaha. It all works great now! Hopefully going on a romp tomorrow and bringin JakeTheMudSnake along with me. Hopefully everything holds up!
