Are you keeping the vari drive? MTD's vari drive requires 5/8" belts. my local supplier of belts is tractor supply, so all they have is pix kevlar blue belts. works pretty dang good i guess. But my system isnt near stock nor have i ran a black rubber belt... I believe the kevlar is interlaced into the belt and it doenst really stretch.

I will not be keeping the vari-drive. There is no pulley on the tranny at the moment, I will install a simple pulley and throttle will be done by the engine rpm.  At a later date I will replace that tranny.

The kevlar is the cords inside the rubber. They dont stretch as much, as you said.

Blue, green/ brown, or red is what youll want. Black will just burn up.

One thing about the MTD system, at least on mine, is that the pulley on the engine was made for a 5/8" belt, and a 1/2" wont grab, so on mine i replaced the pulley with a tractor supply pulley and it works flawless. have TSC 4" pulleys front and rear, no complaints, so id get those pulleys or whatever with a 1/2" belt. Heres my video of the engine pulley swap.
