My tractor I have taken the last few times is beat to hell and I haven't had time to fix anything on it but if I can source a cheap battery and fix my spindles and repair my carb, then I get to take up the no brakes issue, then I'll load it up, but for now I got the gas pedal that is a govennor bypass built for the build[c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2140

For me to take this to haspin id have to build the front end a battery tray a trans brace all the belt keepers and an engine roll cage so I kinda doubt I'm taking it now I work two jobs so every nice day is when I work

So I have been out romping on the rig with my new buddy he likes my other craftsman. we where out ripping and I guess this engine burned a bunch a oil because it started to overheat and loose power, then it almost seized, I was having trouble with the starter too? So I put a half of an old split 6inch rim for a pull start. I pull into my buddies drive way on the rig and it has no power hardly, then she started knocking and tossed the top rod[c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2143
[c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2142
So we tore the rig down I'm gonna redo the wiring again and replace the dash with a better one, and I bought another 100$ parts rig for the MST 206 and a unicorn pressure lube oppy I also got a crank for free from another guy to fix my other unicorn oppy. So now I got a motor to build for the side and like 3 spare mst's because my grey craftsmans MST has rod knock lol. I got a long weekend off and a buddy with a garage I can trash 😂 we gonna be riding this rig Sunday and gonna get some pics of it all painted up and stuff I dont know if I'm gonna get to the front suspension stuff yet or not but the solid axle rides kinda good actually

Well i got the rig going Sunday but unfortunately I went through 2 ignition coils on this motor and I'm not sure why but both of em just lost spark so I have one or two spares left I can try before I have to buy one, I also got front tires cheers with the new tires i got some mint craftsman gt front rims and got the whole setup for 50$![c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2144

I got the body painted satin black and gonna paint the hood this Sunday, I plan to go back to the mower salvage yard again this weekend and see if I can score any cool parts I'm looking at three vanguard motors he has and id consider the swap if the oppy keeps being unreliable.because vannys are peak reliable

Weird it keeps popping coils like that. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a new oppy coil. I think I’ve had one die and another get weak, I just swap them for any other 20 year oil coil I have laying around. Last time I thought I had a bad coil it turned out I had a bad spark plug, probably a good idea to get some new ones if you’re like me and run the factory ones until they fail, lol.

I'd change the plugs as well.  My Green Machine appeared to be going through coils as well turned out to be  bad plug.  Couple other things to look at as well.  When replacing the coil, be sure to brush down the posts where the coil bolts.  They can build up with white corrosion and keep the coil from grounding well. (This is a biggie too).  One other thing.  I have found that the kill wire post near the flywheel sometime crack and ground out the kill wire.  I have started to NOT use this point anymore and just run a wire out with a protected connector and connect to that instead.

This is the post I am talking about.

Got some good pictures of this rig and tons of progress, I'm tryibg to figure out my kill wire situation I think my ignition is what's killing the coils maybe but sometimes it randomly won't start when warm unless I unplug my kill wire so I'm gonna wire to a tug kill switch if anyone has a good recommendation. I got the front wheels on and they look great and clear the frame the steering is nice and it rides great at 6psi I can almost go lower but then the steering might get tough. i got the stickers and crud off the hood sanded it pretty good, not perfect because it's just an off-road toy but good enough. I ran out of filler primer and instead of waiting I just did two thick coats of satin black. I don't plan on leaving it all plain and black I wanna do some stickering and give it a race livery kinda thing gasser style I thought about adding a silver two tone to the hood because it would look cool then i also considered painting my rims gold and doing a gold two tone, idk. Been a minute since I updated busy with work and gutting 2 s10's lol here's the painted hood pics and it all assembled, I had some leftover brackets from some scrapping I did for a guy and they made good temp front hood mounts, the engine has been running great not killing coils I'm guessing it's the ignition shorting out but idk, so for now the kill wire is unplugged and I have the idle set too low so the engine stalls, but I have been riding the heck out of the thing testing and all that and it's reliable other then the worn out belt it slips too much and is cracked and thin, I also need to do the holey pulley mod and still install some keepers, I wanna do a tether kill switch I just keep forgetting to order one [c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2159

I appreciate the kind words, but I cannot for a couple reasons at this time.

  • I have some personal life things about to get really busy for the next couple months.  Might even take me away from some tractoring stuff. I really hope it isn't too bad, but there will be some whirlwind traveling across country in this timeframe as well.
  • It could show favoritism in the build-off.  Very Happy

Doin a good mst206 Lincoln locker welded some washers to the center with my little flux core cheapo welder absolutely cranked and it held up for a burnout![c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2168
I am not a fan of locked diffs all the time my rig sits too high to drift it, also this trans leaks pretty bad one of the axle seals isn't good I guess, plus I put way too thin of oil in it, I put the unlocked 206 back in for now because the 26 inch mud tires would 100% snap that MST, so once I find a smaller set of rears for ripping with the welded rear I can use it. Also it would be helpful for haspin next year

Any tips on making a reliable pull start that doesn't require me to butcher my hood? I'm having issues with starting and I'm about sick of these oppies being garbage that's why I ditched the boat anchor on my other rig and went with a vanguard, I have a good 18hp vanny but it needs gone through and I just dont have time for that right now,
My starter is weak my battery sucks it won't charge a battery worth a dang and vannies have provisions for a pull start also vannys sound so good

Starter weak due to battery or just need taken apart and cleaned up?

Great starter repair thread.

Have you cleaned and sanded all of your connections? Make sure you have a good ground between the engine and frame? If your starter squeals when it spins over then the bushings need to be lubed, you can usually put some oil around the top bushing and help it some. If the starter squeals it will spin slower. These starters are the same ones on every other Briggs, just with a different mounting. They work the same as the rest of them when everything else is right

It may be worth pulling the flywheel and checking to see if you have some grease built up on the alternator in regards to the charging issue. Only other common failure is the reg/rec which is a cheap fix.

Pull the starter off the machine and hook it to a good battery, you can use your truck battery if need be. If it’s spinning slow then you need to disassemble, clean and lubricate the starter. The bottom bushing gets grease, top is oil-lite so just a little assembly lube.

But agreed, vanguards sound like a small block. Lol.

That was about half a spool [c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 2664539216
I'm looking into "redesigning" my chassis I have a first gen steering frame and I'm going to my local mower parts yard "mower man" and I'm looking for something beefy and overkill like maybe wheelhorse steering and I'm adding front suspension finally and I'm going to beef up the frame and hopefully make it have a lower ride hight, I have a 3 27hp generac motors and am debating building around one of them rather then the oppy or vanny but again im upset about my relability issue i want it simple and light for trail repairs

Went for some rides, I fixed the starting issue the carb was all plugged up and I cleaned it good I had never messed with this carb anyway. we went out riding for a few hours had a blast, made a redneck limo which evolved into the redneck train when the other rig ran out of gas lol, other then cosmetics and fixing some wiring stuff I'd say this rig is finished its functional and reliable now[c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2191
[c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 Img_2190

I have more wants and needs but I want to say it's finished for now and I'm going to post the video later I did a walk around and rip video

Wants: front suspension, headlights and taillights maybe dimple dies in the hood like the green machine

Needs: wiring repairs, hood hinges, the hitch straightened and reinforced, front bumper with utility hitch, new drive belt

Havent seen much progress but i have had a little time last weekend and today! bounce
I started with butchering a 40$ crackhead coleman atv for the front end, i cut the spindles down and cut down some craftsman spindles, welded em up solid and reinforced em.
Then i got squirrel brained and chopped up a new dash i had laying around and installed a husqavarna voltage gauge and a brand new freebie oil pressure gauge.
and i then got back to building the front end and ran out of daylight on sunday, started again today and finished my tierod using the stock craftsman tie rod and cut a atv tierod in half for ball joints and adjustability, i got it all assembled and it steers very nice [c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 2731072446
so then instead of fixing other problems i decided to start on the exhaust and i started to make a collector to slide over the pipes i already made, because i lost my old 2 into one i made.
Then ran out of time again and went home to write up my post, had to blue teeth from my janky phone to my janky laptop with a swollen battery [c] [24] Budgets GT1000 "Cruskee" - Page 2 1098998679

the reason i made those hubs is so i can use the cable driven drum brakes from the front of that coleman atv and i am going to somehow make a brake pedal to run those also i get roller bearings and bolt on wheels, now i gotta either cough up 80$ for new tires or adapt the hubs to 8 inch front wheels so i can run my brand new sunf tires.
Another perk of those hubs is it lowered the front end an inch. i definitely likey those fake plastic rim guards tho they look neat.
got alotta work to do this week and hopefully i can get this rig done for the buildoff! the only thing i have to fix is the kill switch to qualify as finished i suppose.
PIC DUMP!
