| I hope nobody is offended by the terms since I am not likely qualified as either a redneck or a Garden City resident. I am expecting to move, eventually, to the outskirts of Washington DC to be nearer the youngsters when I retire. My question is, between northern-central Virginia, Maryland, and eastern West Virginia, are there any areas you know of that have unexpectedly harsh controls on private property or are "unrestricted" as some of the land ads claim? I expected a hotter climate than NY and I'd like to live cheap where I can legally fix a car or park an RV in my front driveway, or put a heated workshop in a shed, maybe a fence all the way around and not just the back yard. Where I live on Long Island those things need a permit or aren't allowed at all. Some places want everything to look like an ornamental garden and they're all over it as soon as they see something else. I have 8-1/2 acres in the Catskills with some rules to follow but the kid's wife's family is near DC and he has a job there now. I didn't make this thread Northern VA in case there's wisdom to be gained by hearing about other places. Anyway that's my questions, can you help me get answers? | |

| Well I'm sure big nice lawns are the bread and butter of the riding mower industry, so that's why I figured you guys would have the best answers to my question. It's only been a week or so but I guess nobody is interested or feels like sharing. That's alright, maybe I'll get some answers when things are slow mid-winter. Or I'll just do without, no problem, fate will take its course. A funny thing is, heading to my doctor's office in the real Garden City, there are big houses with big lawns but local Home Depot & Lowes don't carry riding mowers. The big lawns & half the small ones are maintained by pros more often than home-owners. I think landlords like pros too because a nice looking property gets higher rent & fewer inspections.

| I think the bigger issue with not getting an answer is the members from those areas are not visiting much anymore. I would think the more "restrictions" are going to be more suburb or in town. The further rural the less restrictive like most places. Unless it is a gated or nice neighborhood. I live halfway across the country, so I can't tell for certain. I think the fact that lawn tractors aren't being found at Lowes or Home Depot may be a clue. You are probably onto something there. | |
