Bigger tires, maybe a really small pulley swap, like on the rear, go 1/2 inch down, that probably won't kill it.  Tune up the gov a little.  Hydros have like 7-8 MPH anyway, it's not like the geared trannys, where they stock have 3.5 mph.  So you could maybe get it up to 10. But bigger tires is definently the safest way to hop her up, the other ways might hurt the tranny.

@Double W Cross Ranch Ok I will look into some pricing. I am thinking about, First gettinh it to stock. Then change the tires to bigger ones. and then if i really think it would make a difference, I might put some handle bars on it so it can be like an ATV that is really a souped up lawn mower. And then in the very far future maybe i will change it to a transaxle, So i can do a pulley swap and get some more speed. Because when i went into this I wanted it to look, Not go as fast but look like this.

Build -Off - Off Road Noma Build - Page 4 Maxres10

I mean its not like im gonna put a like snowmobile engine in it. but like the first time i saw this i was like. "I want to build that"

And i have a friend that can weld stuff up for me so im set on doing whatever it takes to get something that looks something like that. WITHIN reason

Yeah, so you can't get more than like 7-9 mph with a hydro, so you'd need a geared trans. I've seen that before, too, it's really cool! Tho, that guy took a 4 wheeler and put a weed eater's hood and fenders on it. Not really a tractor any more. In order to have handlebars, you'd need to rip the whole steering set up out and start from scratch, and it would be kind of annoying to have direct steering unless you have a high speed vehicle. Not trying to dash your hopes, it's still definitely possible. I think that you should probably put a geared trans in it, you could sell that steering trans for a lot of money. AWS is not really that beneficial unless you are mowing. You could put a geared trans in it, swap the front and rear pulley, and easily get 30 MPH. You could get even more, but the trans wouldn't like it lol. Bigger tires, maybe a diff lock depending on the tread on the tires you choose, and if you want to drift. The guy in the vid didn't have a diff. Then buy some metal somewhere and rip the stock steering out of it, and then RedlineMotorSports has some good tips on direct steering.

That friend with the welder will come in handy for that. Wink

Oh dont worry your not putting my hopes down. I think of it as having options. and you just opened my eyes on how much i wouldnt be able to do to put handlebars on it. I actually think I am going to just put a trans on it first to get the speed up. And then go from there.

Haha, no. Two different people fella. About the used transaxle it would have to depend on the manufacturer/model and the condition it was in.

I'd look around for a free tractor first. If the trans is new, probably about $50. Otherwise, how I got the trans that is going in my build off tractor is my neighbor was moving, and he knew I liked to tinker, so he called us and asked if I wanted his non-running tractor, so I said sure and robbed the engine and the trans out of it.

I'd advertise on CraigsList that you will haul away non running tractors. Make sure the trans works, then once you take all the good parts off of it, put it up for free again on craigslist. LOL. Otherwise, you could also go to a tractor pick-and-pull, or something along those lines, like maybe a junkyard, scrapyard, etc.

A lot of people on sprocket's garage facebook group don't like them. A guy posted pics recently of his housing cracking around the bull gear in his differential.

So its too late now to get the geared transaxle. so now I have come to reality that the noma might not be the best for this project. So I could get the noma running sell it for maybe 75 bucks with the deck. Then buy this mower.

It runs.

Yard machines is made by MTD. AK used one, but he will tell you firsthand they’re a lot of effort to make a solid machine out of. The cheapest machines good for modding are usually AYP. Typically a craftsman, poulan, weedeater, or something along those lines. Just keep posting up cheap ads and we will tell ya what to look for

Okay, so yeah you didn't want that spicer trans, trust me I hate mine. Like CQ said, get a Craftsman or something like that. Pulley swap it, put different tires on it, and you are ready for the mud! They are awesome.

For off road, that's great!  Good amount of horsepower, would only need different rear tires and a pulley swap and it would be awesome.  And that style, when you get older and are able to do more, would be perfect for extreme mods. 350 is a lot tho, but if you are willing to spend it then sure, epecially since the deck is in good shape.  A good trick is to sell the deck, you can get 150, 200 for it, and then that will more than pay for tires.

Looking around, this one would work too.
https://blacksburg.craigslist.org/grd/d/snapper-1985-lthp-33-cut-runs/6508153373.html
The PTO has to do with engaging the deck. It would keep you from mowing, but would not keep you from selling the deck.  The switch thing just means you turn the keep to run, hit another switch to start, then to turn off turn the key off. Easy peasy.  Just what ever you want, tho.  I'd take the snapper, cause I like the style.

They might! Worth a try.  Otherwise you could get 350, maybe more for the Noma and then buy another one separately.

The craftsman would be the easier tractor to turn into a mud tractor. Although $350 is a little too high. The most you really should pay for a tractor that you're going to modify is $100, so keep looking.

Hey man, if you want to keep the Noma, how bout getting a trans from here and putting it in that noma.  They usually drop right in in place of the Hydro.

So I need help figuring out how to get rid of the rear steer control rods. Or whatever. Because if I put in a transaxle I will need to get rid of the things that steer the rear. And make a clutch probably.

Well, I've never seen a AWS tractor before. But I assume that if you trace the rods from the trans all the way back to where they came from, there should be a bolt or a cotter pin or something along those lines there. Just remove them and pull the rods off.
