I have a Huskee made by mtd with the variable speed pulley and I have done a pulley swop on the transaxle. now have a problem woth both belts shredding and coming off. any ideas as to why?

The pulleys aren't level. The belt is rubbing on the lip as it spins and eats them up. MTD belts are also 5/8 inch and not the normal 1/2

that might be my problem I´v been running 1/2 inch belt because that's what was on it when i bought it.
