I know, I was looking at the pic of it earlier and it hit me like a brick to the head.  LOL

Yeah I've thought about an alternator before but I thought about mounting in on the flywheel side. Like have a double pulley on the flywheel so the one runs the the drive belt and the other runs the alternator belt. I would have more room at the back side and I wouldn't have to worry about the heat from the exhaust. Either way I don't know if I'll up doing that, might not be neccessary. We'll see though, haha.

So when I picked up this engine the fella gave me the muffler with it, but I just used the one I had. But the one he gave me is really neat because it actually goes under the footboard instead of just pointing outwards.



The reason I didn't use it has because it had a big split right by the inlet, but I figured I could just weld it up.



Welded up good as new! Only burned through one electrode too, haha.



And mounted up. Looks pretty cool!

That's a cool exhaust upgrade. Do you think that went on another tractor just like that from the factory?

Thanks Carl! It sure looks factory to me, but I've never seen one like it on a tractor. Kind of interesting, haha.

Yeah that'd be neat. Allis/Simplicity made those for their garden tractors, they're super rare now though I think.

Dang. Now I need two 820s. I might look for a 633 and use a right angle gearbox to power it off of the oppy.

So since I've had absolutely NO luck finding a replacement 122 series transaxle for this rig, I'm thinking about tearing this one apart to see if it is a simple fix. Anyone have any suggestions? Basically if I put it in third gear and let the clutch out it pops right back into neutral. If I hold it in gear it moves fine but makes a horrible ticking sound that gets faster the higher I rev the engine. I almost wondered if maybe it had a bent shifter fork and it wasn't going into gear all the way but I'm not sure. It only does it in 3rd gear. Any suggestions?

I'm off work today (sick) so I could take some time and look at a parts diagram for you. Any way you could send me a link?

In my wheel horses, 3rd gear is a transport gear and directly connects the input shaft with the next shaft in the series instead of going through a gear reduction like the other gears. This is done in such a way where the gear contact area is pretty small compared to the others gears that are meant for pulling something. This means that grinding into third gear over time can really damage it more that the other gears. This grinding chamfers the gears and if put under a load it would pop right out.

This is the beauty of having more than one tractor man. You can rip this rear end apart, take your time to clean up the parts and inspect everything. I know you can handle the job. It's not something you do in one night. Meanwhile if you're waiting on parts or advice you have other tractors you can ride or work on to get your mind off of it. It took me weeks to do the 3 speed in mud rat, and I was really scared to take it apart at first, but I gained so much knowledge and confidence from the wheel horse forum (sorry guys) that I had no problem putting it back together. In fact I might take it apart again because I don't like the way I locked the diff.

Thanks Carl! I kinda wondered about that myself, about 3rd gear on the countershaft being ground into gear a few times and now has a bevelled edge. In that case I would have to locate parts. I'm still thinking there's a possibility of a shift fork being bent though, but I'm not sure. I'll dive into it soon, haha. I would like to get the MTD driving again though so that'll probably come first.

I forget, is it only 3 hi or both hi and lo?

Also, I wonder if there is another snap ring loose in there.

EDIT: Or maybe a little rust keeping the ball from falling into the detent on the shift fork?
