MTD off-road build (Mobile Terrain Dominator) "1"

Awesome! I was doing some research and the ATV/UTV trail over here about 15 miles from the house was converted to Equestrian only 5 years ago. UGH!

Yeah it was fun for sure! I wanna go back during the day sometime though and bring my brother on the ol' Ford along with us. That'd be quite a show hahaha.

The video did look fun! MTD running a little rough? It is fun to go fast!

No she's still running great, backfires if you throttle down real fast with the short pipe obviously but it's not too bad. I could probably fix it by playing with the mixture but I'll probably leave it haha.

I totally blanked out the new pipe. That's what I am hearing is just the poppy in the engine through the mic. I wish I was playing in mud!

Oh hahaha, yeah that's probably what it was. Yesterday before the romp I did a bit of tinkering with my steering linkages and got it to turn a bit sharper than it did without being so stiff, which is nice.

Also I tried a different clutch spring and it seemed to help the slipping in higher gears but it still slips when I take off in 2nd or reverse. Might have to mess with it a little more to see what I can figure out.

You're running a stock engine pulley right? That's gonna slip no matter what you do. It's just so small

No, it's a slightly larger one welded to the original one. The clutch can be released pretty effortlessly from underneath the tractor so I think it's just a spring tension issue.

You should switch your pulleys to like 9" to 1". No belt slip, and good crawling speed. Truuuuuuuuust me.

Hahaha, actually the next thing I'm gonna do is make a bearing to support my steering shaft just under the dash. I'm just gonna use a pillow block most likely, shoud be a major upgrade from the crappy plastic bushing thing on the dash. Hopefully I'll start fabbing that up tomorrow!

Any update on adding more skookumness to that steering shaft?

Actually I took my fuel tank out and had a look, only to find out there's virtually no room to mount a pillow block in there. Gonna have to try and think about doing it a different way maybe haha. But I did use some "strategically placed" pieces of rebar to strenghten up my steering box mounting. I noticed it was torquing side to side when under a lot of stress, but there's virtually no movement at all now! Which is good. So I can say I got something done hahaha.

I got a couple of little gas charged shocks yesterday, I've been wanting to put a couple on the MTD along with the coils just to have a little shock absorption.

They are about 2' long.



And when fully compress they are just over 1' long.



So they have a real good amount of stroke. They aren't really stiff either, so they shouldn't limit my suspension any. Shouldn't be that hard to mount them up, so hopefully I'll start on that soon.

How many shocks you putting on the MTD? LOL

Just the two. Any vehicle with coils has a pair of shocks as well, otherwise it would be way too bouncy of a ride. Kinda like the MTD haha.

Sooo I bought a couple small items for the ol' Dominator today, one of which I've wanted to do for a while.

First I got a brand new battery for it, the old one just isn't keeping up anymore, but I'll probably put it in the Ford because it has a better charging system and no lights or anything. The new battery should work just fine in the MTD



As you can see I also got an automotive temperature gauge! I've wanted to put one on for a while but I could only fine super expensive ones. This one was much better priced. I'm just gonna plumb it into my oil drain tube as a few others have done and it should work nicely!



It's also one of the ones with the light up background, which is super neat! I'll just wire it to the power wire for my headlights so they come on at the same time



Hope to install them both tomorrow, might make a video for the gauge as well.

Fit in there pretty nice! It never got up above 130*F when I had it running around for a little bit. Could be cuz it's cold out, or because the oil doesnt get hot enough for that gauge. We'll have to just wait and see. Either way it's still pretty cool haha.

It looks nice in the dash as well!

I like the light up feature. To get a more accurate reading you might wanna move the sensor closer to the engine. If you have a drain plug on the other side of the engine without a tube on it you should put it there.

Yeah maybe. It should still read the oil temperature regardless, as long as the probe is submerged in the engine oil. We'll see though, always room for improvement haha.
