Hi all, I am not new to this site, but I have only just signed up to be an official member. Are any other fellow rednecks/hillbillies around these parts? It would be pretty cool if there were, especially for tips since compared to many others I'm fairly new to mower modding.

I have a 1996 MTD 13hp that is currently only lightly modded for offroading.

13 horse is kind of an odd size...what brand, cylinder count, and valve configuration is it?

@CraftsmanQuad19 it is a briggs flathead single cylinder 28 ci, which apparently puts out 13 horse

I've got the same one apparently making 12 scratch

They never remain stock, so I guess the bore, stroke, and valve sizes are all that matter haha

Does it say 13hp on the shroud? If it's 13 it probably is an Over Head Valve unit. Check the front of the engine (or take a pic) and there should be a big cover that has OHV stamped into it.

@MatthewD yes, it says 13hp on the shroud, but it is definitely not an ohv engine, the valve cover is on the side, not the front and it doesn't have ohv stamped into it. Weird that it's a 13hp, I thought that was odd when I bought it aswell...

I've seen 12 and 12.5, so 13 isn't a stretch. Just a little different than I'm used to seeing anyway.

Yeah... so have I, 13 is different to what you normally see, but in Australia there are quite a few COX tractors that run a similar engine. Not that it matters, when I'm done with it it should put out a bit more... hopefully

Port, governor delete, eyebrows, and carb should wake it up pretty nice.

Yeah thats exactly what i had actually planned. I have already ported and polished it and put a performance air filter on it, and have a carb kit on the way for it. Governor and eyebrow shaving will be in the next oil change.
