Mr.Modified's Simplicity Adventure Edition [2016 Build-Off Finalist]

Thanks redzz. I have the simplicity in the shop at the moment with the front bumper and running boards re-touched gloss black. Just realized I don't have too many close up pics of this thing completed. I'll take a couple before the end of the build off.

Wow, I love this tractor! I think you have the build off in the bag this year!

Looks great mr.mod! I really like the look of the dash, and the ol' Simplicity sticker on the air box is a nice touch as well.

Nice! Did you ever think on putting fenders on her for water crossings/deep mud etc? I think it looks cool without fenders though.

Thanks a lot guys! I was actually going to make fenders but I think now I might just leave it. At haspin, I rode in some mud and it wasn't so bad. Some mud does get thrown onto the back of your pants at speed, but it's not too big of a deal. Once I leaned way over to make a high speed turn and the back tire scrubbed me pretty good. Fenders would be a help for that. On the side the battery is on, it would be hard to find a spot to mount the fender.

HASPIN.....five months away.....time to get last years issues straightened out on this thing.
First issue of course is the large pulley on the jackshaft is off center. A new 3/4" keyed shaft is on it's way from BMI karts. I plan on getting some new pulleys and making a whole new setup so the pulleys won't be welded on this time. Opposite the pulleys, I may add a small drum for a band brake which will slow the shaft when the clutch is pushed in.

The list...
-New jackshaft
-Replace brake bands
-Hood rack extra bars and shovel holder
-Repaint top of hood before reinstall hood rack
-Fix broken throttle adjuster on pedal from 2016 haspin roll over
-Stiffer spring on alternator belt tensioner
-Air box internal screen to keep foam from being sucked forward
-Add rear D-ring?
-Add back up light?
-Check for loose bolts, grease, change oil

Mostly minor issues, I think for the most part everything works as it should. Once this is put back together I think I may start on the matching trailer, if so I will start a separate thread for that.

Simplicity Adventure Edition brake replacement instructions...

Step 1: After cutting some sections of serpentine belt to length, place them in line with the wheel hub through the frame bracket clamp so the belts are sticking out towards the front of the tractor and snug down the bolts. Don't over tighten as this may lead to belt breakage.


Step 2: Fold both belts over the top of the bracket, then down and around the wheel hub as shown.


Step 3: Loop belts through the brake pull rod from the bottom up and bolt on the brake pull rod clamp, taking care to keep the belts as tight as possible as some stretching may occur during braking. Test brakes and re-adjust as necessary.

Try the "baler splice" stuff from the nearest farm store. It is a section of conveyor belt. Alot of guys use this for rag joints in drive line. If you are replacing it already, and have to put a "preload" on it, the splice will work better

Lol, reminds me of a certain video from Rob Dahm....

"if we never want the body found, we should ship it ups" LOL. I still didn't get my jackshaft, but I know it has been shipped back to where I bought it and should be on it's way back. They couldn't figure out the address on it the first time, due to how it was typed in on the website.

I made an official cardboard list of things to finish. That's how you know things are getting serious. I have the space around the tractor cleaned up a little, hopefully this weekend I can get the jack shaft finished. The hardest part is just reaching the lock bolt's on the bearings that hold the shaft in. Another thing I want to add is another red light under the forward part of the hood. It will make taking a quick look under the hood at night a bit easier without needing a flashlight. Progress reports soon.

Cool! I'm interested to see how you're gonna do the light plug for a trailer, that'd be pretty neat to have.

Thanks. For the trailer light connection, I was thinking of wiring up a 110v socket from an old extention cord or something, but maybe I will just get a regular automotive 4 prong trailer connection instead, then I could just use what pins I want to. I'm pretty sure I will only have a tail light or two on the trailer. Maybe a light inside the box too but we'll see.

Hood off to get to the jackshaft easier. First time the hood has been off since I bolted it on for haspin 2016.


Haspin dust from 2016 still on top of the engine.


Top of hood will get repainted. Hood rack removed for welding in more supports and shovel bracket.


Old jackshaft finally removed.


Had a clearance issue with the new pulleys. Old jackshaft in the vice to hold one of the new pulleys while I trim the hub down.


Cut most of the way around.


Cut finished, about 1/4" removed from the hub.


Pulley now lines up where it belongs and clears the side cover.


Testing out the anti mess oil drain for the first time.


Works perfect, no oil on the frame or anything else.


The oil had some aluminum sparkles and also some aluminum flecks in it. Engine still sounds good, so not sure where that came from. Looking for a spare engine to build anyway to have on hand for trips. Started the engine today and it still runs good after sitting for awhile. More updates soon.
