If I face an axle backwards, and then spin the pulley counterclockwise (looking down at the pulley), will it still operate normally?

I think it will, if that is clockways rotation stock. also, the john deere gx95 runs the transaxle bakwards and it is run by the back side of the belt

No the tires will pull backwards. It would all be backwards because the tires are pumping you backwards instead of forward.

Right, but I've spun the axle 180 degrees, so forward is backwards and vice versa.

It shouldn't matter I run mine so the input shaft faces forward and reverse rotation to make it shaft drive. If your worried about it just open up the case and see how the gears and case is built.

Is'nt that the normal operation, counterclockwise? if so it'll run backwards. If you change the direction of the input and rotate it, - it will run normal again.

It should be fine... The only diff internally will be that you will be wearing the BACK side of the teeth.... Since the teeth in these are symmetrical and straight cut, no problem... with helical cut gears, you need to make sure that there are thrust bearings on the opposite side of the gears, as they will be pushing (creeping on their shafts) in the other direction.

Like I said, our straight cut geared tranny's don't care which direction they go.

Ok, that's what I thought. I was looking at the steerable transaxle and it would be smarter to face it backwards if used in a 4x4 project because the case sticks out too far when facing it forwards.
