A truck axle that's on leaf springs? That mechanism pretty much works like two independent swingarms. That is, if the shackles are in back, the other end of the leaf spring is just a big trailing link, like a swingarm. (we know it flexes, but that really just changes the yoke angle under torque. That's what ladder bars and traction bars "snubbers" are for). Did I lose anyone?  Cool lol! cheers

I was just clarifying what I was looking for when I made the thread, witch wasn't a atv swing arm type like that

I guess I should have put more detail in my post.  I posted them for the talk on mr.modified's drawing, of how to keep  chains/belts tight throughout the axle movement.  So in other words look at his drawing and take the dashed line out and and put a jackshaft in there, then run a sprocket from trans to that jackshaft, then on both ends of that jackshaft there needs to be sprockets lined up with the sprockets for the wheels.

I know its not a 4 link setup like you were talking about but this could solve his problem.
His drawing is kinda like a trailing arm/link setup.

I also designed a true 4 link setup for my allis but never built it.  All I can say is its kinda like yours but still different.

Drawings help so much!  And that's a nice drawing BTW.
The way it looks, you're going to need a lot of slide movement on the driveshaft.  Looks like it will want to be shorter when the suspension is loaded: Longer when unloaded.  The key (same as with a chain) is to have the transmission yoke as close to the pivot point, or in the middle of the pivot arc.  Should be easy to do with your design.  You may end up lowering the 700 output to somewhere in between the front links ends.

Edit: The driveshaft wants to be parallel with the trailing arms.

I was thinking kinda about that but I have no experience with 4 link geometry, but I get what your saying. Maybe move the link mounts up would be easier, I mean if your gunna hack the frame you might as well go all the way lol.

Yep, you got the gist of it.  Wink
Every change for the better has a compromise attached to it (usually). That's what engineering is all about. So, then contemplating a change, always ponder any and all negative effects to said change.
My guess is that you will not experience any performance gain with a 4-bar linkage over a swingarm.

Maybe for high speed but for a crawler like I'm thinking, it would help around the rocks. Top speed of like 10mph just for wheel speed.

Are we talking about independent rear suspension? That would make a nice crawler. You can do this with twin (side-by-side) swingarms a lot simpler than 4-bar linkage. And you will lose nothing but complexity.

However you attach it, your limit is usually the diff case. So huuuge wheels is needed.

Also consider running the shocks on a different location, imagine a geared shock. that way you can have a shock with a travel limit like 3 inches, but infact the travel can be 18 inches, since you "gear" it.

In a way yes most have a short shaft on oneside for a break and on the other side it has a longer shaft for the sprocket but on a dual ouput it has a long shaft on each side with dual sprockets

They have the possibility to, but some are delivered with the righthand sideshaft cut off.

There was a 3 speed 700 with the dual output shafts with cup pliers in a snowblower. shame I didn't get it for a spare tranny!

I'm in the process of building something that fits this thread pretty well. Its a bolens with a 5hp Briggs, shaft drive and lots of articulation front and rear! Check out my YouTube channel rarbaugh07.
