| OK, I've made a lot of progress. The engine, exhaust, chain drive, gas tank, steering, etc. is all in. Next step is to complete the wiring and see what this beast sounds like with the dual cherry bombs! I geared it down from the original motorcycles 100 mph top speed to a new torque enducing 50 mph. Should have plenty of grunt. There are a lot of little things to do before it's driveable, but it's a lot closer than it was last Summer. I'd love to be riding in the Spring. Oh, the old gas tank in the back will be a trunk for fetchin the mail and holding refreshments as soon as I cut a door in it. Enjoy, Randy | |

| That looks like fun.
My uncle has several yamaha bikes and a suzuki just sittin around, I might see about acquiring them sometime. The Yamahas got 3 cyle engine in em... ought to be plenty of power for a gokart/buggy/lawnmower type thing.

| Thanks y'all. I appreciate the encouraging words. The idea was to make it look like a 50 year old ATV and I'm pretty happy with it up to this point. I might get fancy and put the original rear shocks from the motorcycle on the front of the tractor to dampen the front end, but I am putting that one on the back burner for now. Also on the hunt for an old hand winch to mount on the front!
I just finished up with some other obligations around the house and can now spend some time on this project again. I'm really looking forward to getting it rideable and seeing what it'll do.
I'll let you boys know when I get it fired up.
Oh, btw - I am looking for a bulkhead type fitting to put in the bottom of the gas tank that will provide a barbed fitting for the fuel line. I'm not having much luck. Any leads for me?
Thanks, Randy | |

| Cool build!
You're goiong to want to install a fan inside that front grill I think. But the charging system on that motor should be able to push a fan, depending on the year of the motor. Hopefully it's a 12v and not a 6v.
What are you running for a gas tank? If it's a home made tank, best het would be to go to the hardware store and get a 1/4 NPT shutoff valve and install that. You could get someone to weld or braize a 1/4 bung on the barrel or whatever...
edit: I see the tank. Doesn't it already have a petcock on the bottom? You could drop it and run a snowmobile fuel pump, driven off of the pulse from one of the intake manifolds....

| No reverse. The 71 Honda 350 engine/trans assembly was just 4 forward gears. I just used a jack shaft between the engine and the rear sprocket to power it. Nothing fancy. | |

| im not sure if you know, but do you think you could put cb350 carbs on a cb400 and re-jet them? I have a cb400 with no carbs and all the junkyard has is 350's. | |

| I'm probably not the person to ask, but my guess is the carb from a 350 (which is actually only 325cc's) will not flow as much air as the carb from a 400. You can rejet all day long to get the fuel/air ratio correct, but that will not increase air flow through the body of the carburetor. It would be like putting a two barrel carburetor on a car that came with a four barrel carburetor. It will work, but will choke performance. Just my .02 cents. | |

Yep, (edit) That's the 4 cylinder, right? They should plug right in. Don't bother rejetting until you get it running. You may not have to change a thing.

| A smaller carb (airflow smaller, not physical size) tends to increase low end torque and decrease high end HP at wide open throttle. 99 percent of the time you are not running a carb at it's max air flow. This is why the quadrajet has thos tiny primaries and huge secondaries. The tiny front 2 barrels increase low end torque and fuel economy during normal driving. If the carbs from the 350 will physically fit, I'd say go with 'em. I wouldn't mess with the jets. Unless you intend to build an all out racer, it shouldn't matter to you.... they may even be the same carb. Yamaha used the same mikuni carb for everthing from 200 to 1000 cc's. | |

| Oh, gett'n stoked!
It's funny, I stripped, chopped and cut up the tractor from it's original state and disassembled the donor motorcycle into a zillion pieces over a year ago. After a while, you start to wonder if it will every breath again. Well, this weekend it came one step closer to coming to life. I finished up the wiring, tested a few circuits, and turned the key. To my amazement, the starter spun and the spark plug I had laying on the cylinder head had spark. It's far from being drivable, but it looks like I can actually start this machine up and hear it run very, very soon. Hopefully I will have time next weekend to plum the fuel system and give it a whirl. Wish me luck.
