I have not. But your description intrigues me. If you or anyone else would care to, please post a pic or two of the guts. As I say: "Where there's a will, there's a dead relative"... There's gotta be a way to pull it off.

Indeed a common problem when locking a diff. I actually have been toying with a no-weld diff lock method that would not only eliminate that possibility, but offer a solution for people that are not equipped to weld.

F.N.R. trans-axles are usually found in mtd tractors, it is just a tranny with forward, neutral, and reverse.  They also feature a CVT drive system. Technically you only have forward neutral and reverse with a CVT drive system.

Both. I have three mtds with vari-drive. The 93 wards and 94 troy have the fnr transaxles. The bigger mtd tradesman has a 2spd w/n & r and 1" axles. So before I pulled the vari-drive it was a 14spd. Ive yet to lock anything or even open up the fnrs.

I've got the pics but I cant seem to get them to work on this site. I disassembled one outta a 93 Montgomery wards today. Im not locking it though. It looks like it can't be done due to the spider gears housing. Idc though, im lookin to use the parts for a overkill steering system.

If you'd be so kind as to provide a link or email me the pics, I'll post them. I'd like to see the inside of one of these, and see if maybe myself or somebody else can dream up a way to lock them.

"This is best I can do for now. Took pics with tablet so they aint the best. You'll notice the bottom center pic has an arrow. That points to a c clip. Its the same on the other side. To remove the spiders one has to be removed then the shaft slides thru the housing and spiders to come out. The only way ive seen transaxles locked is by welding the spiders to the shaft, thats why I said impossible (premature im shore). Also, the spiders must be removed to bolt the axles gear on. Ill try to do a pictorial or video on a disassembley."

Ok- I copied it over. you should be able to do this too- Right click and copy your URL. Then, hit the little icon that looks like a picture, two icons to the left of the YouTube button. Paste the URL in there and you're off.

My first impression is that I can't see why a Fozzy Locker wouldn't work. Failing all else, it should be a doable option. If you cannot (or refuse to ) purchase the special gears, you can make your own. I will show an example of a purchased gearset, and a homebrew version. anyone lock a mtd fnr 4b9903ec582bd_153864b

PostSubject: gear ratio?   anyone lock a mtd fnr Icon_minitimeNovember 16th 2013, 8:04 pm

Incase anyone is interested, I counted the teeth in the gears incase you wanna figure out the ratio. Ive never bothered to learn.
The top gear turned by the pulley is 14 tooth, it turns the forward and reverse gears that are 42 tooth. Those turn the shaft that a 10 tooth is on turning the 72 tooth that bolts to the housing for the spider gears. If anyone could explain how to figure out the ratio I be greatfull.

It's all division and multiplication. Divide the input set 42/14= 3
Divide the output set- 72/10= 7.2
multiply both results 3x7.2= 21.6

Therefore, total reduction ratio is 21.6:1
