| Out of curiosity, I was curious as to what brand and viscosity everybody ran in their engines, or what they prefer.
Me personally, I like Pennzoil 5w30. Its more expensive though so I usually settle for Parts Master 5w30 or 10w30. I plan on running full Synthetic in everything of mine soon. Head Forum Administrator ** Chat Moderator ** Facebook Page AdminATLTF Facebook Page ** Chatbox ** How To Upload Pictures

| Full Synth 5w50. On modern stuff. Single grade (mineral) 30w on the old deere. Earlier I preferred Pennzoil on bike engines, but now I really like Castrol. But I don't really have a reason for liking one over another, same smelly stuff in all +- some additives with strange names. Isn't it with oil like with Toothpaste? same shiz different wrapping

| I got a 5 gallon bucket of heavy duty 10w30 a while back.
It was a freebie, so I run it in everything that isn't critical.

| In some larger engines, over 500cc/30cu in or about 17HP+, I prefer to run Shell Rotella T Triple protection 15w-40 Diesel engine oil. Yeah yeah it says diesel on the bottle... :roll:it's an extreme pressure engine oil for anything run long and hard, as most ATLTs are. Smaller motors [under 500cc/30cu in] should just go with 10w-30 mineral or synthetic, or just straight 30 weight oil if you only run it in the summer. If in doubt, check your manual or a sticker on your engine. Most briggs air filter covers will tell you what oil to use and when. General rule is 10w-30 summer and 5w-30 winter. Oh, I havent used the Rotella T in the winter, and I wouldn't advise it as these air cooled engines run colder when the ambient air is cooler, so the diesel oil is probably too thick to get where it needs to be and you could prematurely wear out your engine.
p.s. the first two digits in a briggs and stratton model number are its cubic inch displacement i.e. model 90202 lawn mower engine is 9 cubes, or 148cc, and a model 190502 snow blower is 19 cubes or 311cc.

You also live in West Virginia. The winters down the mid-east here arent as harsh as the northernmost states. Head Forum Administrator ** Chat Moderator ** Facebook Page AdminATLTF Facebook Page ** Chatbox ** How To Upload Pictures

Interesting. I would consider this too thick for our industrial/stationary/tractor engines. May I ask why you would select something with such a high viscosity when it is clearly contraindicated by all the manufacturers' documentation?

Interesting. I would consider this too thick for our industrial/stationary/tractor engines. May I ask why you would select something with such a high viscosity when it is clearly contraindicated by all the manufacturers' documentation? My uncle is a master mechanic and works on everything from cars and light trucks to yachts and cruise ship. He has used this 20w50 and the lucas oil treatment for about twenty years now. He got me onto it about 5 years ago and I said the same thing, thw viscosity has got to be too high! But after 5 years im a believer. I use it in my wifes mini van my truck all my mowers. I use to commute a hundred and twenty miles a day for work and I drove a saturn vue with a 2.2L 4cyl. It called for 5w20 I always used 20w50 with the lucas oil treatment. The car had 322k miles when I stopped driving it. I sold it to a local mechanic who later told me the engine still had near factory compression! I have never had and issue starting any of my motors even in the coldest days of winter.

| That's amazing, and near-unbelieveable. But hey- If it works for ya, it works for ya, right? And why mess with what works? | |
