| Do you think that a fan or a vacuum of some sort attached to your intake would be kinda like a turbo? Cause you can buy a cheap vacuum at Goodwill and then through it on in probably less than a day. I know it's not going to be as effective, but would it help? | |

| Possibly, but powering it would be the toughest part. Unless you're talking about a stationary engine. I've heard of people using smog pumps to supercharge small engines. Doc sprocket will be experimenting with one here soon I believe so we can keep an eye on that | |

| Well, I'm thinking of hooking it to the alternator, so the more gas I give it, the more air it will get. | |

| I would think that would be too much for the stator to have to constantly power. Wouldn't wanna fry it. | I'd probably put a kill switch on the circuit, and just use it when I get stuck or want to go really fast. | |

| Well to be honset I dont think it would help you go really fast or get out of being stuck because even if it did give you more RPMs that doesnt equal a whole lot of wheel speed. It would maybe still be cool to try but if you wanna go fast I'd say you might have to start messing with pulleys. Also usually when you're really stuck, tons of wheel speed just digs you down deeper and really screws you over. | To be honest, most engines have enough power for the practical pulley swaps. Too aggressive of a pulley swap and they just slip. FearlessFront just said in one of his videos that his briggs single has more than enough power and yeah he could go to a vtwin and get more, but why? He also mentioned that it just adds weight for power you really cant use/take advantage of. I agree with both of those statements. In theory it would work and would be interesting, but there is a lot more that goes into it. All the effort, tuning, reliability, weight, complexity, and for what? 2 extra hp and 40 pounds of weight?
Just not worth the effort IMHO but you do you man, nobody here will stop you

| Yeah, I saw that video. Well, I have a 1977 Rally roper. It has a 5 speed peerless which I neeed to lock, a 12.5 hp engine that I hope to make into a 16ish. I wanted the turbo because here in Texas, we have practically no mud. Even in our rainy season, its muddy, but not mud hole kind of mud. So I don't get stuck in the mud. But if you never been to Texas, we are not at all flat, despite common misconceptions. I help on my neighbors ranch a lot (they have a stock JD automatic w/ the deck and everything) and their land borders a canyon, so their is lots of rocky areas to get stuck. So it doesn't hurt to dig ruts. There also are a lot of wide, deep cracks and such, so I need the get-up-and-go-speed of a turbo. Plus, there is absolutely no noise out here, so a screaming turbo on a hot-rod tractor would be so cool! | |

| I have 12.5 hp flathead in my MTD as well. Besides a slightly ported intake manifold, custom air intake, and homemade PCV catch can thing, it's bone stock. It has plenty of power for what I'm doing. I'm not pulley swapped mind you, but those ol' Briggs flathead singles have plenty of power regardless, so I'd say just keep 'er the way she is and you'll probably be fine. | Couple other things you can do to boost power, ungovern it, port the intake and exhaust ports, OHV piston and rod from a 28 ci briggs are stronger and fit right in, and I believe the OHV cam will fit too. Oh and remove the "eyebrows" too for better flow. That and a 28 mm mikuni knockoff slider carb will get you 16 hp and be much more reliable than any form of boost. Pulley swaps are where speed come from. And you can experiment with different exhaust setups till you get just the sound you want.
But like I said, everything is in the hands of the builder

| My first experience with a Kohler is not a good one so far. Engine appears to be in mechanical order, but I cannot get it to start or at least fire. I have very good spark, good pressure. In this pic I took the carb off to see if the input valve was going up and down. I need to clean it anyways. I am at a momentary loss. Fluid in comes out the exhaust port when it opens. I can get a 50yo briggs to life after 10 years running. This thing....

| I thought valve lash as well but you said it had good compression right mighty? That might not be the issue... It wouldnt hurt to check though cuz they probably do need a bit of tightening up. | I think it is something simple. Like a bad spark plug. I could have swore when I checked spark, I did it through the plug. I can throw a good with a screw driver, but not the plug. I'll buy a good plug and see what happens. Otherwise, maybe a weak coil.
I feel silly now. I even popped the flywheel to check the key.

| This is just a thought, in school we was taught how to test spark plugs, this was for aircraft engines. Pulling a plug and cranking over the engine to see spark on the plug is just half of a spark plug test. They had a test box with a so called buzz coil on it and an airline hookup on it. Screw the plug into a chamber with a window to see the spark on the plug and push the button, see the spark. Then the second part of the test was adding air pressure to it to simulate compression of the engine. 120 psi of air. With it under pressure, retest the plug for spark. The pressure would sometimes not make the plug spark. Very good testing of plug done by simulating engine conditions. Just thought I'd throw that in there, I never see it being done. Probably be a good You Tube video making a tester like that. I already have a magneto I could use for the spark.............. | |

| Yeah I think Briggs used to make a little tool for doing that. You would thread the plug in then pump it to pressurize the little glass tube with the plug end threaded in. It would be cool to find one of those old tools.
