| Ok i got a 12 hp ohv tec engine vertical shaft when i got the tractor it started hard but after sitting this winter i cant get it to run at all. Carb is clean, has good spark the stater works the engine turns good, What the issue is when cranking it over it turns over hard and has a kick back like affect. Like it has too much compression,i checked the rockers and adjusted them to the factory setting of .004 but still does the same thing. With the spark plug out it turns over fine,i dnt know wth is going on with it? | |

| Does it have adjustment for timing or just gap?
If you have compression, fuel and spark, and the timing is correct, it should run.
I would install a new plug, and try it.
Sometime plugs will spark outside, but fail under pressure., also make sure all the elctricky connections are good and clean.

| You didn't mention slow cranking, just seemingly high compression.
get a bigger battery, check the solenoid, and make sure the starter isn't dragging. Did you bypass the solenoid with a booster cable?
This has been covered in a dozen threads.

| Has the battery been frozen?
Motorcycle batteries are generally only good for a year or two, GT and Utility batteries not much longer.
beeing froze will kill them.
Even if only 1 cell is bad, you are screwed.

| Ok make sure that battery is fully charged. then make sure your ground connection is on good clean steel.
Be aware
The connections at the starter are key.
the thin edge of a booster cable clamp does not make a good connection on a threaded starter post
Good ,solid connections are required at all starter posts

| One more suggestion before you give up?
You said it had been sitting on the bench... Was it sitting level? When an engine sits off level for a period of time, oil can seep past the rings and hydrolock the engine. If you get bored, pull the plug out again and tip the engine so the plug hole is over a catch pan- Who knows? Might have a big ol' mess of oil go drooling out of the cylinder!
