Oppys Never had luck with those things. Actually have one in the Murray donor twin that I gotta do something with eventually.
Yeah, they don't have good low down torque (At least the ones I had) they eat fuel, they throw rods at 3601 rpm, and they never seem to run right.
Counterpoint: this engine is on all stock guts
Oppys literally cannot hurt themselves if they have good oil in them. They do tend to puke a bit of it when you’re pushing 5500rpm though.
Counterpoint to low torque accusation:
Oppys are less efficient at high RPM due to the flathead design. Therefore they must have more displacement to achieve the same HP @ 3600rpm as a smaller Vtwin. So a 46ci oppy and a 35ci vanny make the same 20hp @3600. However these flow limitation are null and void at low-mid throttle, meaning the 46ci 20hp oppy has the same torque as a 46ci 27hp Vtwin up to a certain point in the RPM range.
So, by simple facts of design, you are wrong about the low end torque being lacking. Perhaps you just don’t know how to clean a carburetor?

Wonder what the torque rating is on my 42ci 18hp. And, where did all the oil come out at?

Man those sound good! Do you have a muffler on them? That tone is very different than mine. Maybe cuz mine is always wide open. What is your idle set to? (And are you running a gov on them?)
Self made muffler on Red Bandit. Looking to change that actually.
No muffler on Kal. Just straight pipes.
Motorcycle muffler on Dirty Rat.

Seems like we have had different experiences, every time I have pulled a governor the oppy blows up 10 seconds later. As for that axle proving torque, with the right gearing I could shear one of those with a weedeater
I've just found all the oppys I've owned have poor low down torque specifically at idle, they also have a poor power-to weight ratio, singles have a way better power-to weight

Not sure why you had issues. If your engine surges at all or has poor throttle response then you’re definitely not getting all you can out of the engine.
Briggs oppys are pretty good on the power to weight side of things. They’re not a heavy engine at all, and a clutch dump with one with a good pulley swap can easily dump a tractor over backwards. Compared to the kohler or onan oppys they’re lightweight. And if you wanna talk about an atrocious power to weight ratio, look at a K series kohler. They weigh like 150lbs to make all of 10hp the Briggs singles really have them beat there

. Fair enough, the briggs singles and vanguards still seem to have a better power to weight ratio. Perhaps I need to try buying proper carburetors, I've just found other briggs engines to be more reliable and run better in general.

How do you think a stock oppy would do on meth with a blower?

Our old neighborhood looks to have taken a direct hit by a tornado last night. Damage is very bad. MOST homes are still mostly intact. All homes have some kind of damage but there are a few that had the roofs crushed or torn off and had a tree through them. It halfway leveled the forest this neighborhood is in. This is going to take a year to recover from at least. Glad we don’t live there anymore. We didn’t even have a twig fall about 6 miles down the road where we are.
It’s obviously sideways but that’s a portico wrapped around a tree.
It’s a war zone out in that area. They won’t have power for at least a week by the looks of it.

We just had a nader rip thru town yesterday while I was at work. Tore off several roofs, and the storm in front of it felt like a cat 3 hurry.

Figured out (kinda) my exhaust setup. Single stack, which will be a 1.75" glasspack, and a rain flapper thing. Too big, I know, but it's what I could get. Gotta figure out how to remove the broken off exhaust bolts.
