1969 Wheel Horse 700 WORKHORSE

The only complaint I have is the shifter boot on these suck. Basically if you go anywhere deeper than about mid ways up the tractor 9 times out of 10 you've got water in the trans. So these things like to have there gear oil changed.

What kind are they? Just an off the shelf double lip that a ball on the shifter rides against? Pretty sure that's what my 2300 has.

Its basically just a hole with a taper at the end so the ball doesnt fall all the way through and then theres a set screw that lockes the ball in place so you cant just pull it out. The set screw sets into a hole that's drilled about an 1/8th in the side of the ball and is alittle bit bigger than the set screw so it allows enough slop to shift gears. Its pretty simple I probably made it really confusing. But my problem is that there is no seal or gasket like a 2300 has.

So basically it you took a 2300 and took 3 screws/bolt (cant remember what mine has) out and take the shifter out then just shove it back into the hole on the trans that about what a wheel horse has.

That kinda sucks. I wonder if you could machine it for at least an O ring seal.

Here's what it looks like. Idk if a guy could make it seal with an O ring or not. Basically I just shove a bunch of grease around it and then around the top of the boot.... thought about silicon around the boot but I dont think it would stick for very long.

It would be pretty easy to chuck it up on a mill since the bottom is flat then a guy could cut a groove for the O ring. But idk where you could put one at.....thought about just cutting out a piece of rubber that's the same size as the square that the shifter ball is in then cut a hole for the rod and then silicon that down. So at least I could get to the set screw.

Idk I guess I'll see how bad the water gets in.....I've never had it that deep before.

Could you just get a new boot?

It's got one on it but there not very good they just kinda set on there. The bottom likes to move around alot and wiggle it's way up the shaft.

I've definitely noticed the same with my 655. It just kinda sits there to protect from dirt that falls down, not like an actual seal. You can slide it up the shifter and see the shifter ball.

More of a shifter "skirt" than a boot, hahaha.

I made some bumper mounts. I think it will be strong enough.

Well I was thinking about welding this thing up but then I remembered that the welder has thin wire in it for sheet metal so I'm gonna wait. I really want to burn it in good.

If you prep your surfaces and run it with the right settings it'll hold it just as well. My dad's mig has always ran .023, nearly the thinnest you can get. I've welded a lot of structural stuff with it. I save some of the heavier stuff for the stick welder so I don't waste gas.

I guess I'll give it a try tomorrow and see what happens. Worst comes to worst I can always re weld it.

I got my bumper all welded together and painted today. I switched the wire out to .30 Not my best welds but should hold. Right now its drying.

Wanted to go for a ride today while the bumper was drying but I ran out of gas and then I found out that we're all out of gas. ...................so I pushed it back home.

Hahahaha! I run out of gas a lot. At least I can tow it with the golf cart LOL!

Well I never did check the gas before I left because for some reason I guess cause it's a honda I thought it gets 5000 yards per gallon. Then I get their run out of gas then walk home for nothing but disapontment. Then I had to push a 500 pound lawn mower back to the house. Lessons learned here.

Very nice bumper.  Looks to be pretty sturdy.  Thick stock for the mounts.  If you wanted to make it even more sturdy in the future, you could add a couple gussets to them.

Bumper looks sturdy. I gotta do something for a bumper soon enough on the GT6K.

I had to push my go kart like ¼ mile back to my house once. Man, that sucked.

Well I got my bumper all mounted up today. Forgot to notch the bumper for the hood pin and spent all day yesterday doing that, also had to make a longer hood pin but its on there finally.

It's been awhile since I last posted and really nothing has changed. I've been working on my truck as much as I can so it'll be ready for me to drive to school this year.

Thanks! It's a 1967 c10 long bed stepside 283sbc standard 3spd. It was my dads first vehicle that he ever owned. Been in the faimly for 30 years now. Been sitting in a barn since 1998 pulled it out last year so it had been in there for 20 years. My dad ran it every 5 years or so. But It runs again, I'm working on brake lines right now and replacing them all because their all original and in rough shape.
