Allis-Chalmers B-110

Looks like what could have been a catastrophic problem turned out to be something simple thankfully.  Can you easily get parts for this?  Is that gear box sandwhiched right inside the frame rails or is it part of the frame?

Yeah for sure. The bearings are just standard ball bearings and one needle bearing, so they shouldn't be hard to find. The seals might be a bit trickier to locate but I might be able to find some.

Tore into the B-110 over the weekend to get a better look at the situation.



Found out the play was coming from the cross shaft where it rode in the ball bearing, it was wore down and could move around in all directions, almost like the shaft was spinning inside the bearing. Also the gear had apparently spit out the woodruff key and spun around on the shaft, seeming to basically weld it to the shaft. Long story short, due to the worn shaft and the siezed gear, there was only one was to get the shaft out:



Yup, haha. No big loss considering the shaft was worn, and I have a parts machine!



Just took the cross shaft and gear out of the parts tractor and they're both in good shape.



Put half back together with the old bearings and everything is nice and tight! No play or anything, although I'm still gonna replace both bearings just to be on the safe side.

So pretty much just need two bearings, two seals, and she'll he good to go! All the numbers are still on everything so it shouldn't be too hard to get all the new parts.

Hopefully she'll be back together soon!

If all of the oil falls down to the bottom of the case, how do the bearings and gears get lubed?  I don't see how the oil can get on them.

It doesn't, LOL. On the back cover there's a spot to fill it with gear oil, it's just about the same height as the cross shaft, so the oil level is about that high up.

The stuff you see at the bottom is just sludge from over the years without an oil change.

Little progress today, I got the bearings and seals so I started re-assembling the BGB.

Cleaned all the sludge and stuff out if it with some brake clean and a rag, then put the bearings and seals in both sides.





Then the shaft, key, and gear:



Seems good so far! No play at all and everything seems to spin real nice. Should be much better for sure.



Still not much to look at, but we'll get 'er put back together soon! Just gotta put the cover on and fill the BGB with oil, then I can begin to re-assemble the whole tractor.

Alrighty, decided to go hard at this ol' girl over the weekend. Got the BGB all sealed up and started mounting up the trans once again.



We got rear wheels! Filled the BGB with 80w90 as reccomended.






Finally got everything ready and fired 'er up to see how the BGB acted:



Woohooo!!! Runs so nice and quiet, had no issues at all!

Fenders and hood back on for a test drive:





Fantastic! Everything worked flawlessly! No funny noises or other issues whatsoever!

Did a bit of disking too so I could test it out with a good amount of load on it.



Very very happy, so nice to have my ol' Allis back together again. Also glad the BGB didn't asplode or something during the test run.



Couldn't be happier to see 'er parked in the shed again at the end of the day, haha. Let me know what ya think!

Yeah I'm guessing it'll be a lot happier with the new bearings and oil in there, it's definitly nice and quiet. Should last a long time!

Did a bit of screwing arou- err, working, with the ol' B-110 and the suspension trailer this weekend. I had the snow blade on but I removed it since I wanted to use the rear lift hitch.





The BGB hasn't done anything funny, no bad noises or what have you. I dump the clutch in 3rd every once in a while just to see if it makes the gearbox do anything bad. Nothing bad yet, so I guess I should probably stop doing it before I break something else.

He sure loves to ride on that trailer, hahaha.

Do I smell a potential mod here?  One that allows you to use the front blade and the rear lift at the same time?

I wish my dog would ride in my trailer....

Not a bad idea there Carl, it'd be handy for sure. Might be able to make a second rock shaft for the deck/blade lift, and attach it to the factory lift cam somehow. Not sure, might have a look underneath next time to see, haha.

Yah, my dogs would bite the tires first before even thinking about getting in the trailer, just because the tire was rolling, LOL.

Took 'er like a champ! Although pulling through the bumpy hayfield wasn't the most fun activity I've ever done.

Glad the BGB didn't make any noise or do anything funny when I took off with all the weight behind me, I'm thinking it's safe to say the rebuild was a success!

Used 'er to haul some scrap lumber and stuff yesterday with the suspension trailer:



Then at the end of the day it started flooding to the point where it barely stayed running, so sometime soon I'm gonna take the carburetor apart and inspect/clean it. Hopefully that fixes it.

Probably some boogers in the carb.
