| I have not done it, but I've thought about it. From everything I can tell, it will function just fine.
I am assuming you want to use it on a vertical shaft engine, like a lawn tractor. My only concern there, is it hanging low, under the belly of the beast, as it were. CVT's aren't happy when sand or mud get up inside.

| If you have a skid plate... The worst that can get in is a tiny bit of mud... But mostly sand and water | |

| The problem with skid plates and other shields is that while they can HELP keep crap out, they can also help trap crap in. Food for thought. | |

That's a very valid point, I learned long ago also on waterproofing stuff. If you can't get it 110% waterproof, then don't waterproof it at all. Just let it rince off and air dry again.

| The Comet 40 is factory rated to 18hp. However, I have NO doubt it will handle 20. I rant the HELL out of a 40 for years. Bulletproof. | |

What about ATVs? I know some newer "automatic" ATVs are just a cvt with mechanical reverse gear, and usually high and low range to choose between. Some guys absolutely bury their ATV in mud.

I had an ATV like that. Never fully sunk it. I CAN tell you the CVT was quite well protected though. If it DID get full of schmutz, it WOULD be a problem. Simple mechanics.

Yea the atvs normally have a cover that goes over it with a gasket, drain plug on bottom and a "snorkel" that runs to the bottom of the airbox for vent and cooling that's on a few I've seen.

| That's exactly how mine was laid out. Was a late '90's Kawi Prairie 400 4x4. | |

| So far as I recall (been awhile) it's just a matter of pulley diameter, so it affects the final drive ratio a bit. I have a 40 setup, never had a 44. | |

| Hey N1ck, I'm just done reading this and I think a 40 would be best for this since people have used them more. And thanks for being part of the trip, the more the marrier!!! | |

| I know this probably dumb but, could the cvt be placed above in the tunnel area via short vertical jack shaft? It would keep it protected somewhat . | |

| Had been toying with this idea too, but as Doc says the driver will hang low below the engine, for a 44 its about 5.5 - 6 inches, so a decent bit below your frame rails, then the mechanism of the driven pulley is also in the way as it protrudes the opposite way to the driver. i messed about with a bunch of different designs to accommodate it on a vertical shaft setup, pretty much all would involve a jackshaft setup, it could be done ok especially if you had a tractor with a tunnel type body as Dave says. keeping it accessible for maintenance would be key in executing it well too. did you want to ditch the transaxle and run a 90 degree box and a go kart axle?
in the end i opted out of the idea of using it as i wanted to bring the engine as far back towards the driver as possible, so there was no room for the cvt. whats your application?

| I was thinking of running a cvt to a transaxle for a street build but it got shot down | |
