| I had a push mower engine that I used to mess around with. I tried changing the timing by just getting rid of the key all together and just eye balled the keyway, then carefully tightened the flywheel nut so as to not turn the flywheel on the crank. I marked TDC on the flywheel with some white out and used a timing light to get an idea of where it was firing. I don't remember it kicking back too bad or anything. Pull start of course. What's a car engine in general run on the road? Around 30 degrees advanced maybe? Should check it out with a timing light and get an idea of what these run stock. I don't remember what the push mower was, of course I was kind of guessing around at things. | |

That was pretty funny. Motorcycle thing? Yeah. Someone had it in their sig. and now it's the first thing that comes to mind when someone talks about timing/jetting.

| Back from the grave, hard to get stuff done in 40 min classes and every other day. Decided to try this out while i have the opportunity. Stock el portos Dremel meet ports! Power difference? Ehhh... Experience? Check! do i have to lap the valves or what when they go back in? Planning on getting some chopper sheeting for gaskets, then i can get most of it together. Gotta get some black pipe elbows, got some tube so i can fab up a intake manifold to the intek-nikki carb. eventually pull the flywheel off and shoot for 3-4 degrees on timing. | |

| I have always thought that it would be cool to make a "hemi" head for these... it would still be a flathead but have the headshape of a hemi. | |

That would be sweet. Like the outside covor like a heim or a actual hemispherical combustion chamber?

| nono, it would still be a flathead, but you could just take and remove a lot of the head's material to make it into a "hemi" head and then deck it to regain lost compression. | |

Hemispherical heads only work on ohv's because of flow probably. Nothing the same about ohv and flat head motors when it comes to combustion chambers, so im not sure where youre going with this

| i was talking about just taking the traditional headwork a step further and then you can say "my mower has a hemi in it"

| hemis have a rounded piston so they fit close to the head, and make higher compression. So it would only work with a ohv head because its round-ish so....how would you make it a hemi do they sell rounded pistons? would the head need any special attention? | |

| yeah you would need a special piston.. depending on if you have access to a lathe you could make your own from a chunk of billet aluminum! but i still think it would be cool to be able to say that you have a hemi in your mower

| not sure if i am understanding you right, but wouldnt drilling the piston rings just give the engine a ton of blowby into the crankcase?

| no you just take a pison without any rings in it and drill a little notch at the top of the grove the ring sits in then the presser of the cylinder helps to push the rings into the cylinder wall and it should help you make a little extra power. | |

| Finally, i win! Getting cleaned up. I have the block on its side ready for the crank case bolted back on. Can i make a gasket from a sheet of gasket maker? Also I cannot find chopper sheets for the life of me! Will other metals substitute? And do you have to deck the surface for a head gasket swap? | |
