the first number (or numbers) is indeed the displacement in cubic inches. The briggs website has a lot of very useful information, including model and code breakdowns. Is there anything in particular you're looking for?
Look at this too- http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/~/media/Frequently%20Asked%20Questions/Engine/Numerical%20Designation%20System.pdf

I might as well be a caveman when it comes to internet. Looked on the website cant find nothin. Iv got a 18 hp ohv briggs intek and i wont to know what makes it different from smaller hp briggs motors. How is it differ from a 15.5 ohv or so on. How is a 31 cid better than a 28 cid. I understand its 3 cid bigger in the combustion chamber. Just wont to know if carb is diff is cam diff or rod longer. Any reply is welcome thanks doc for the key.
