- I was thinking the other day about how the mtd vari-drive works, and how most of there tranny's are a single speed foward and reverse. Your gears are controlled through the vari-drive pulley's. What if you took out the old single speed foward/reverse tranny, and replaced it with a 4 or 5 speed, and left the vari-drive intact? You would still have the 5 gears from the vari-dirve(I've seen some with 6), plus the 4 or 5 gears on the tranny. If you did it with a 4 speed tranny and 5 speed vari-drive you would get a total of 20 possable gears! A 5 speed tranny with a 6 speed vari-drive would give you 30 gearing options.
Are you all getting what I am saying? I know we all hate the vari-drive, but what if you made this work? I think It can be done quite easily! In fact, I have an old complete 6 speed mtd body and frame, and two 4 speed tranny's, one peerless, one foote.
Hmmm..... Hey fearless, I did it with a 6 speed peerless from a Murray and an MTD varidrive with a 18 hp opposed twin. it goes about 15 mph, and I use it for lawn tractor pulling in the 750 lb modifyed class. the only problem is finding the right belt. the size was between 45" and 46", and I finally found a 45 1/2" from a heavy-duty Chevy 4500 coe with the Izuzu desil? idk how to spell it, but it works pretty good, I will get pics soon

| this is a document that I wrote for school.
I bought a MTD lawn mower with an 18 hp opposed twin that was missing the rear end so I put the transaxle from the Murray in it. Someday when I get a good pulling tractor I think that I will make it into a racing mower out of it. The deck lever is the shifer. Daddy took some of the parts to be sand blasted. Then we modified the fenders to fit a bigger battery in it. We also modified the rear panel to fit a bigger battery. And then we modified the shifter panel. And then we got a new battery box. I also got new transaxle seals for my rebuilt transmission. Then I got to stay up late and put the transaxle back together. Now I just need to clean the other half of the case. Then we sandblasted the parts that needed it. Next I think I will make a firewood trailer for it out of this one that my dad found in the woods. Well I did that and hauled two loads of firewood up to the house and then the clutch fell off. So I am going to build a better clutch system. Now I just have to put the MTD back together. We got some of the parts together but we need to work on the new pulley. It looks a lot better than it did before! Daddy is going to get the tires for the back tonight and then I can drive it! The engine runs but I still need a belt and a big zip tie for the gas tank. I got my tires back and I had to paint them again. It is all done! When the rain goes away I will test drive it. I got to drive it! It goes faster than before but Trevor’s white is almost the same. Now I just have to pant the wheelie bars and cut the tires. I just painted the wheelie bars and weighed it. Daddy cut one of my tires but the rubber was really hard. I am going to have them filled with calcium chloride for more weight. I had to replace the coil because it would not start when it was hot. I had to get a 45 ½” belt from an industrial truck and now it doesn’t slip at all. The swamp is getting deeper every day so I am making a canal for the boat to go in. when I get the MTD back together I will pull it up to a little lake that is about ¾ of a mile from us for some summer fun. We drained the swamp so now we have to take the boat up to the lake. Next I need to sell some parts that I have in my shed.

| I would not run calcium chloride in your tires unless your gonna tube them, calcium chloride eats steel like candy. very fast and uncontrollable. | |

| this used to be a "canada special" with lights that stay on all of the time. I bought a harbor freight fog light kit and I used my own switch so I took it and drilled out the stock cutout and wired it up. my dad unpluged the headlights because he thought it effected the charging, so he will be happy. it almost looks stock! | |

| what do you guys think about swapping out the opposed twin out for a 15 hp ohv briggs? I think I will put ATV carb on it. I've already cleaned it up and got it to put it on but when I was cleaning the carb I dropped it and broke the float. so all the better time to put on a better one. | |

| Lookin good man! I'm still working out how to beef up the axles in the original mtd single speed. I may center mount it like redneck computer geek did with his hydro, and make independent suspension swing arms like the old Subaru brats had for the rear. Since I need to relocate the rear end rearward anyway, I may be able to leave it in the stock position, and build rearward from there. I'll start a new thread on my build, don't mean to Jack yours, but seeing your setup is helping me put some design elements together for my own. | |

| I got the carb off of a 230 suzuki quadrunner, but our suzuki didn't have one like it, so I think that it is an aftermarket part. it is a Keihin carb. | |

I have the same 4 wheeler. I think its a 85 or something model and it has a carb that goes into a boot that is attached to the carb with fighting a hose clamp. I also thing it has a mikuni carburetor on it. Do you know the year of it?

| well, i was driving along, running about 2000 rpm, no load, and it stopped. pulled it over and i hear this metal-hitting-metal sound. pushed it back to the shop, pulled the drain plug, and the first thing that comes out is two peices of govener rod...... and the oil looked like metalic paint..... i will pull the engine later today and see what is wrong, and remove the rest of the govener | |

| Big update! the engine is now the kawi from the murray and the tranny is a 930 from a john deere. the 930 has a short shift shaft and input shaft, and the mst had long ones. nothing would work, so I riped out the hole sistem. built a new clutch in using the vari-drive mount and got it all reddy for a drive! time for school thow. the originall deckbelt fit purfectly! | |
