| I'm trying to put a taller tire on the front of my 1995 MTD 660 series. Stock wheel is 15x6x6 and the spindle is too short to put an 8" rim onto. How can I put a taller, skinnier tire on like the one on the front of the tractor in the opening page for this forum; The one with the American flag draped over it? | |

To solve your problem. Depends on how big you are going. Sometimes, you can cut the back of the wheel where your shaft slide into it. Or some like to take a large hardened bolt, and cut the head off. then they weld the bolt to the end of spindles. Then put on your wheel, apply a nut. then take anther nut and tighten them against each other to keep them from backing out. Washers are recommended. In the case of redline's merica mower. I believe he just cut them down. You can also take the original front rim and weld the original inner wheel (where it slides onto the shaft) and weld it to new rim. ~TBP

| I can't cut the center hub down on the backside because it's already offset and when I slide it onto the spindle the tire is tight to the spindle assembly. I thought of welding the bolt to the end of the spindle but I would have to space the wheel out so far to clear the spindle assembly that I would have about 2 inches of hub sticking out beyond the end of my spindle.
I may just cut the axle portion off the spindle and weld on a portion of a 3/4" rear axle in it's place. That way I'll cut off as much off of the ends of the old 3/4" axle shaft that I need, weld it on and still have the hole in the end to put a bolt into.

| Indeed it is mine. How i did mine was cut the sides off the original rim, and welded it to the center of my new rim. It wont help you here with your spindle being to short(?) like is your rim 8" wide and the spindles made for 6" wide rims? id get a 3/4" bolt, cut the head off it so your bushings can ride on that, and you have nuts to lock the end. | |
