| setting up for chain would be annoying. and plus. chain clutches are centrifugal brakes. they wouldnt take pulling and mudding very well and would slip | |

| The 40 series Comet copy is very good. But depend what you mean by offroad, and you will have to keep it bone dry.
Same cvt's are used in ATV's. But then they are boxed in as part of the engine in a watertight box.

Dude... What? Chain drives are dead easy to set up, and are a lot less touchy than a belt tensioner clutch. Chains don't slip! And what on earth do you mean by "centrifugal brake"??? A Comet 40 series is a good choice, IF you can manage to keep it reasonably clean and dry. You could use a jackshaft to move it upwards in the chassis. I will be using my Comet 40 on a tractor soon. Either on a rework of the MULE, or I might build MULEII.

| Nope. CVT's perform clutching in addition to varying the drive ratio. From a basic mechanical standpoint, it has a built-in centrifugal clutch. | |

| Oh, I did read the whole thing. The basic concept is that it'd be fantastic off road, if you can manage to keep it reasonably clean and dry. I plan to do this by using a jackshaft to relocate it.
...Then you asked if you'd still need a clutch. I said "no". After that- nothing.

| oh sorry the clutch question was refering to the person who mentioned running a chain. and if i build my swamp buggy ill run my engine high enough that i can just put that. if i run a double pulley tensioner with a lockout to stop it from keeping the belt tight with a torque converter would that work do you think? so its tight all the time without running a cvt setup? or would i have to run driver and driven? | |

| the tensioner being that when i give throttle and the torque converter starts doing its thing and pulls the belt where the tensioner starts working then | |

| Back to my previous answer then- you do NOT need a clutch (of any kind- not centrifugal clutch nor tensioner required).
For clarification- a "torque convertor" IS a CVT. CVT is the proper term for it, and it consists of 2 parts- driver and driven. You must use both parts.
Usually, the output IS a chain, but you can use a belt. The output belt should remain tight at all times..
