| i have a question, when i dump the clutch my engine acts if it tries to die before grabbing hold [ if that makes sense} its a flat head briggs 11 1/2 hp. it does this as i start to climb a steep hill also just as i let out on the clutch. any ideals? also if i put an oppposed twin on that has gas tank mounted higher than carb will there be any problems? | |

Are you running it at over half throttle when you dump it? Also there shouldnt be a problem with mounting the tank higher, the carb will still only let so much gas pass through. Head Forum Administrator ** Chat Moderator ** Facebook Page AdminATLTF Facebook Page ** Chatbox ** How To Upload Pictures

If you are moving you should have the throttle up. Not all the way but half is a good point. if you have it low idle and drop the clutch so the belts get tense, its gonna catch it off guard because it was just running at a low idle instead of a running speed where handling movement would be no issue. I had a 12.5 OHV on my Gen1 racer and always had it minimum mid throttle unless it was stopped and in Neutral. | When it starts to stall does it smoke black/ grey or sputter. if it smokes try adjusting the adjustment on the front of the carburetor in a 1/4 at a time if it doesnt get better in one full turn then turn it back then take the carburetor apart and it should have a brass or copper float and what you need to do is bend the part that pushes the needle so that it closes it with less gas in the carb (or sooner). adjust it very little at a time. If it sputters its running lean (not getting enough gas) do almost the opposite of what I said before, adjust it of, bend the part on the float so that it let allows more gas in the bowl. If I need to do a video just let me know.

| Well it seems I me like he's not getting all 11 1/2 horses. When's the last time you took the head off? Are you burning oil? If the motor is too old or has bee worked too hard it may be time for a rebuild.
It is natural for an engine to bog down a little bit if you launch it hard. I stick my tractor in 5'th, and slam off the clutch. It misses a beat or two but then keeps on pulling.
