PostSubject: Mud tires?   tires - Mud tires? Icon_minitimeJanuary 18th 2012, 7:00 pm

I have stock carlisle turf tires on my Wheel Horse and those just aren't going to cut it for the mud. They are 18x8.50x8. There really arent many choices for aggressive tires from what i've seen. Should I look harder? Or should I get some different wheels? The tallest i'd go is 20" by the way. Thanks.

carisle has AG tires (AKA V lugs.... tractor tread) in size 18x9.50x8 for 60 apeice but they last forever unless you cut a hole in them or they rot out... i have a set of 26x12x12 and they haven't lost any tread i did have to put a tube in one because the tire started rotting away from being older than moses... Yes 18x9.50x8.50 will fit on your current rim it would just be a tad bit wider which looks cool to some. The taller you go with agressive tire tread the more likely the transaxle can crack depending on the model so 18s is a safe bet.

Okay, I was just worried about the extra half inch of width on each side, causing some c;earance/rubbage issues. Looks like i'll have to take some measurements to be sure. Thanks

They should fit with no problem i've had wider and taller tires on many different tractors, only way i think they would rub is if you were to run them on the front which i don't think is the case.....

Okay thanks. I guess it looks like I'll be saving up for some super lugs. I think those would be just at home in the mud! Razz

Both pulleys are stock and I have Hi and Low gearing. I am yet to try her out, but I think she'll do alright. No need for a fast top speed on a mudder anyways.

You can also spend $40 on ebay for a tire groover and make your own cheap mud tires.

I assume you are referring to turf tires. Like remove every other "knob" so there are bigger voids?

Yeah

Here are some examples of opening up the lugs.

Grooving is used on dirt track cars, mud racers, offroad rigs, and anywhere that you want to increase your tire's performance.

Yea that resembles siping more or less, at least in my opinion. I would love to do it because it has the potential to save me money, BUT one of my rear tires has no hope with all the dry rot and leaks. I'd be better off getting those carlisle super lugs imho. Thanks for the idea though!

Siping are smaller cuts to improve traction on wet pavement or ice.

While watching those youtube clips I saw one on the side to a guy who used a chisel(wood?) and a torch to groove his tires. Not as pretty as the real thing, but I'd give it a shot on some mower tires. If I didn't have enough ATV tires that it.

While that may work on mud tires, I don't really think it would be too effective on turf tires with the intention of mud performance

I used razor blades to cut the tread blocks on a pair of super-turf tires. It was tedious work, trying not to puncture the tire or my fingers.
