Hey everyone let me know what you prefer between the good old L-Head style Briggs or the OHV style. Also give me the reason why you prefer that style of engine.
I'm asking cause I am in a pickle. I was going to rebuild an 15.5hp I/C Gold OHV (28N707) but now I came across an 12.5 I/C L-Head (289707). And looking in to the engine the bore & stroke is exactly the same. Only thing different and not by much is the card n valves.

Personally I like L head opposed twins. Singles I could take or leave. I like they are simple and easy to work on.
OHV's are not too bad. They are much more efficient and are easier on the gas, or should be. I wouldn't turn down a Vtwin though. Easier to adjust valves too.

I prefer an L head for simplicity and reliability. The OHV will have more power off the bat for the same displacement- for example, a 18hp opposed twin L head is 42ci while an 18hp V twin OHV is 35ci or so. Same as your 12hp vs 15hp. However, stock flathead ports offer a lot of room for improvement with how poorly they flow from the factory. Some work with a dremel or die grinder and a good carburetor will get you a lot of extra power out of that displacement. The big 42ci and 46ci L head opposed twins have a lot of displacement just waiting to be used, all you have to do is make them breathe. That’s why I like them.
I prefer the old L heads, even the singles but the OHV have their perks as well most notably they're more likely to be pressure lubed which is great for our use! I don't know about the rest of you but I spend alot of time past the recommend 15° inclination angle! Lol.
