[DNF] [22 BO] diddie's Salvage

Not a lot of progress since last update. been working on my hood prop situation

in this first pic. i made a bracket to attach to the top of the hood to hook the hood strut to. the strut in the pic was way to short. part of the reason for very little update. as i need this done before i can break it down to do all my final welding and a bit more fab work.


After a couple trips to the junk yard and some trial and error i managed to make this thing work. 
unfortunatly the winning strut is weak and just bearley holds it up ! But i know what it came off of and ordered a new one and will have it in about a week. But with that done i can move forward !

Nice bit of engineering there.  I need a new set of those for the trunk of my car. LOL

Have you ever watched a video of a car accident and the car is on fire and those lift cylinders get hot and let loose sending parts thru steel body panels.

well since the hood now opens like i want it to, now it needs to have a proper latch. so a quick trip to my employers private junk yard, and i got me a latch and stricker off of a ranger tk.

it was a bit of a struggle getting it figured out. after looking , measuring and scratching my head i dove in and started cutting !


than i made this piece out of angle iron to mount the latch to and tacked it into place and marked it to drill the holes.
next i welded the striker to the hood. 
with everything figured out i was able to get it all mounted and working.


now time to clean it up and make it all purdy !


at this point let me just say how much i hate welding thin metal !


but with some grinding and filler i'll get it looking a bit better. 
At this point i decided to make a list of what i have left to do ! Dagonit i wish i wouldn't have done that. IT'S A LONG LIST ! oh well back at it !!

Man, I was thinking the same thing on Li'l Red a long time ago.  Glad to see someone else has had that idea and implemented it!  Great Job!!!

@Brianator @MightyRaze Thanks ! i appreciate it. wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but i'm happy with it just have to hook up a hood release handle now.

Not a lot to report. But i did work on cleaning up this piece i welded on to the hood to protect the latch assy. Can't say i like the looks of it but it is there to serve a purpose of protecting the latch. and once i mount a winch in front of it you won't see it anyway.

then i got busy making a hood release handle. i repurposed  the old throttle leaver and relocated it. it sticks out a little further than i want but that will be adjusted. and you can see two extra holes ! YEP i drilled them in the wrong place. but i'll weld them up and all will be good.

i've never had this 22 hp B&S running on more than some carb. cleaner for for about 30 seconds about a year ago. so my grandson will be staying with me this weekend. i figure it will be a good time to teach him how to revive it. carb overhaul, oil change, new plug and fuel filter. and we'll see how she runs !

Well i got my hands on these snazzy LED lights on the old ebay ! under $22 bucks shipped.

and let me say they a more than bright enough trust me I made the mistake of looking at one while i hooked it to a battery just to see how bright it seemed !!! Whooo i'm still seeing spots. Now time to figure out how to get them installed in place of the old fixtures.

looks like i'm going to have to get fancy with some metal work to make them look like they belong. did a little trimming and fitment. i think they will work out.

Wow, great find! A little metal work and it will be perfect.

welding thin metal and working with angles is not my strong suite. but i jumped in to get these headlights fitted into this grill and try to make them look like they belong there.



Got this piece fitted and tacked in place. it was a lot of cutting bending rebending and hammering to adj. but i finally have it where i'm happy with it.



After some grinding and adjusting. I welded a bracket inside to mount it and unfotunatly it was off a bit so it was pointing out a bit, so i had to cut it move it and reweld and got it where i'm happy with it. so did a little grinding and got it ready for some filler. I couldn't wait to hook it up to see how it looked.



Now for the real hard part and to see if i have what it takes to make the left side match the right ! Boy OH Boy i've got my work cut out for me now !! i foresee some agrivation in my future. Wish me luck.

Nice work man, I wouldn't have even bothered to do all that but now that I look at it, it looks like a factory job, nice work.

Got busy working on the left headlight fab work and it was tricky getting it to match. a lot of fitting grinding bending and adjusting, But i belive i'm happy with the results.




Now for some adjusting, some filler and a lot of sanding. A bit of primer and paint and that hurdle will be jumped !!

Well trust me you don't want to hear me sing lol I can't carry a tune in a bucket ! on that subject if anyone was wondering my name is Dan. diddie is a nickname my wife gave me 30+ years ago. and it has nothing to do with rap music or the monkey from Donkey Kong. lol

Got busy this week doing a little body work closing up the holes in the fenders.



using and working with Bondo has never been my forte ! but i do like the smell of it ! But after some sanding and primer it turned out pretty decent.

then on to the right side filling up the old shifter slot.




I need to get to moving I'm ready to ride this thing !!

Well it looks pretty darn good from here! What I find to be really important with filler to make it invisible is to feather the edges in a little to the point it's almost see through, it's a real art that takes alot of time and patience to do well!

You're doing a really good job with your build and I enjoy watching your progress!

Thanks @Brianator my problem is i'm always not sanding enough or sanding to much. as you say trying to feather the edges ! it's a fine line. it's good enough for this woods romper. but iv'e got a car i'm restoring as well and i'll need to improve for it lol.
