[Rules DQ] - Mikeymcc98’s Terry the transformed toro [2019 Build-Off Entry]

This is my first attempt at making a mud mower. Got the inspiration from seeing fearlessfronts Murray and doc sprockets mule. I will be using a few of their ideas as well as a few of my own. I’ll b using a 12 hp Briggs, a peerless 801, the steering and fuel tank off an old toro mower and everything else will be fabricated by myself. This is a list of what I’m planning on doing ,
-28mm mikuni carb
-Locked transaxle (already done)
-custom chassis
-fabricated fenders, bonnet and panels
-car alternator
-double pulley clutch
-front and rear led lights
-brake light
-parking brake
-paint engine block
-add pillow block bearings and bronze bushings to steering
-rear winch
-custom bumpers
-belly pan
-5 inch rotor and mechanical caliper
-19-8-7 front tyres
-22-11-8 rear tyres
-5 inch front pulley 4 inch rear
That’s what I’m planning on doing so hopefully it all goes to plan!! Bottom picture shows how much of the chassis I’ve done made it 3 years ago doesn’t look great now but it’s rock solid and will look sweet when it’s done

Do you have a tractor frame you are working with?  I see custom Chasis, fender... are those parts in the picture?  I feel we need more in the image with a sign.

So I basically got the engine finished took off cylinder head gave everything a good clean it seems to b in very good condition. I cleaned the block and sprayed with Matt aluminum engine enamel. I just have to paint the shroud now . I installed the new mikuni carb and the engine started right up for the first time in 3 years and runs great . I also cleaned all of the old grease out of the transaxle welded the locker even more checked everything it looks to be in very good condition aswell minimal wear. I’m now running a grease/oil mix Andrew have added 3 grease fittings to the top all around the main gears so I can add some fresh grease every so often            To ensure adequate lubrication. I sealed it up with plenty of rtv so I’m basically done with the engine and transaxle now so progress is good

What's up with that starter bendix assembly though? I don't think it's been put together right... Is there a screw in the hole for the roll pin?

@AllisKidD21 Yaa ur dead right was like that before the spring is fukd and the plastic thing is upside down and damaged so I’m going to order a rebuild kit to sort it out but it managed to work fine earlier when I started it but good spot!!

I welded in plate steel to support the spindles as they seemed vulnerable to bending or braking but they should be fine now. Picture shows how it was before hand and how much stronger they are now.

Solid mod idea and that's a pretty good looking weld bead.

Yeah definitely a good call on bracing that spindle bend, a real weak spot for sure right there when left alone. Nice work!

So I basically got the steering done today have the shaft running on 2 pillow block bearings absolutely no play and very smooth a huge upgrade on the plastic bushings that were used originally I also used a dremel to make the tie rid holes slightly larger so I could press in small bushings. These eliminated virtually all of the play in the steering so I’m quite happy on how the steering is going so far. I had to cut the original steering shaft because the steering wheel was seized to it but I will b extending it.Still waiting on the new spindle bushings from bmi karts aswell as the 5 inch mechanical rotor and disc but the build is coming along nicely.

That's a pretty serious steering setup there! Nice!

Got the main body of the exhaust done today turned out real nice used these old  clusters I found from an old milking machine that were buried under a load of rubbish, there made of stainless and welded surprisingly well with 6013 rods. I plugged the core pipe halfway and made a series of slots on each side and also put steel wool in between the

pipes to deaden the sound a bit. Very happy with how it worked out not sure if I should make a stack or run it up beside the left foot rest any suggestions appreciated!!

Looks great! Guys that build these homemade mower glass packs really like them.

I think a stack looks cool but it's not the greatest around trees or at keeping fumes out of your face.

I vote run it beside the left footrest.

@Crazy_Carl thanks man I’m gonna mock it up beside the footrest and see how it looks and if I don’t like it I’ll just to a stack and hopefully don’t smack it off anything

Got the front axle finished installed new steel bushings and drilled and tapped for grease fittings for each spindle. It’s a nice tight fit and grease can still get in between the bushings and spindle so there should be minimum wear. I had to cut a slot in the pipe and pry it open a bit because the bushings were just a little too big. I then added a piece of steel to fill the gap and then I welded it solid. Everything isn’t really solid now just need to paint everything.

Got to paint the glasspack red and run it along the foot rest, LOL.

I needed a steering wheel so I fabricated one out of some chain turned out really nice. I’m going to wrap it in a nice soft grip so it’ll feel nice. I used a nut for the Centre that’ll screw onto a bolt I cut the head off and welded to the top of the steering shaft. I’ll put a nut on the shaft then tighten the steering wheel against it and then tighten another but against the steering wheel so it’ll b very secure amd also easy to remove aswell. I also gave the 801 a good clean and 2 coats of zinc primer 3 coats of gloss black and a coat of clear turned out pretty nice

Love the steering wheel!!
