Doc Sprocket's "Boss Hoss" [2018 Build-Off Entry]

Alright, alright alright.

Two steps forward, a step back, a bit of a sideways stumble, and *BOOM* Fall flat on my @$$. LOL

Okay, by now most of you have heard the news- Cents-Less has gone by the wayside, or at least for now. The replacement project is Boss Hoss- a diesel-powered 1967 Wheel Horse 1067 with the venerable 6 speed (3 hi, 3 lo) cast iron transaxle.

The basic plan is pretty straightforward- Get the diesel to fit, whatever it takes (that'll be interesting, but small potatoes compared to Diesel Weasel. Gotta get it all wired and plumbed, controls in place and functioning. For now, the wheels and tires will be coming straight off Cents-Less and on to Boss Hoss. Fender clearance issues included. New seat and a snazzy paint job. Transaxle locking treatment will be applied, bumper, winch, lighting, rack, toolbox, etc etc etc.

The overall result will be a machine that I hope will tolerate and conquer anything I put in front of it, chugging thru with the grunt of a diesel. Water crossings will be no issue, as they often are.

I have entered this halfway thru the competition, but I'm gonna give it a whirl! Naturally, I'll be torture-testing this as soon as I can! Stay tooned!

Engine placement is not fixed. Rear tires don't clear. Hood still a half inch too low even with airbox, muffler, and fuel tank off.
Oh, boy! While I was hammering the old front inner bearing off the right spindle, a rod end on the left side... Fell... Off. New heim joints!

Whatcha gonna do with all that space in front of the engine?

The engine location isn't set in stone yet, I was playing with positioning. In all likelihood, fuel tank and winch will go in front if the engine.

Looks sweet. Those tires are very aggressive.

They need to be. I play in all sorts of terrain- mud, dirt, rocks, brush and logs... Add some moisture and stuff can get pretty hairy!

Nice start. Already has a custom steering wheel on there! I like wheel horse grills, they're pretty nice looking.

Not sure how wide your headlight hole is... I think 7 3/4 inches?  Maybe a pair of smaller or a single flush mount nilight in that space?  I know @Crazy_Carl likes his light bar.

Ok, little update here-

The frontend needed some love. As I was putting the pizza cutters on, one of the rod ends plumb fell off. I noticed the axle was kinda stiff, and a spindle C-clip was missing. Dragged it into the shop. In a matter of minutes, the other 3 rod ends fell off and the spindle was falling out. Ok fine. I tried to drive the axle pivot bolt out. nope.
Got mad and sawzalled it out. Now what?
Enter the IFS frontend from a 90's Polaris Trail Boss 2x4. It wasn't the easy swap ob I was hoping for because the subframe is actually asymmetrical on those stupid things. Took me a million measurements to get everything aligned, but it's there.
I Build some new tie rods from 1/2" Sch40 steel pipe and 12" heim joints. With a slight modification to the factory WH pitman arm, it steers again. Pics and vid:

The independent setup looks pretty slick! Should handle real nice once you get those struts tuned it. A sway bar and links setup would be neat too, but probably not neccessary. Looking great!

Very nice.. I was originally planning independent suspension at first, but decided another path. Sure looks nice. A definite contender to the end!

First i were sad to see Centsless gone... But your new Plans for Boss Hoss are damn great! Love the Diesel, and with the Mud Lites and the new Front Suspension it's a Beast! Ya need some new Front Tires, the old ones are worn and do'nt look that great.

Two possibilities. 1) Spacers. 2) Doc Locker style live axle. Either way, I'll likely widen the rear a couple inches.

At first I thought meh, diesel wheel horse. So what?

Throw in a little suspension and doc sprocket inginuity and it makes a pretty awesome machine

Isn't it already pretty wide? I would be interested to see how it performs without a locker, then after it was locked see how much the performance increases and handling. I would think with that front end it would do pretty well with an open dif.

I love the 1.5" wheel spacers I'm using.  I do however recommend locking it and since you would do your famous doc style live axle locker that would be the perfect time to widen the track width.

I think a Doc Locked Wheel Horse is in order, regardless. Eh?

should be a good challenge with the diff carrier and the needle bearings on the axles.
