Yeah Right now i'm making all sorts of stuff on the lathe. Im making a weld on hub now. How easy would it be to make some lock collars?

turn the ID, OD, lenth on the lathe. Then put in it a vise on a bridge port, face off a couple areas to drill, tap, and counter bore for socket head cap screws, cut the part in half with a bandsaw and boom! you've got lock collars.

Yeah I'm just not too sure how I would make the screw part. I will see if I can come up with a design.

You can’t drill on a round surface like that but if you spot face it with an endmill first then you can drill for the screws. Were you planning on making the one piece type with just one set screw in it? I prefer the two piece clamps because they have really good clamping power and are easy to remove.

Yeah I was thinking more of a 1 screw type. But I guess 2 screws would be better. What kinda screws do you use? like grub screws or little bolts?

The ones I have in stock have two 1/4-28 x 5/8 SHCS (socket head cap screw) in them.

Is it true that with the single screw ones that aren't cut should not be screwed into the key way. I'm just curious even though I don't have a full key way. I think before I try to make anything real fancy I will just try to make some of these.

They are designed to be on the shaft, if they were in the keyway they wouldn't habe much thread left in the collar and would literally screw up your keyway lol

Well if you look around, lock collars are like 2-3 bucks in my area.  Be worth it to me to buy one and know it'll work.

Don't thread them into the keyway. Tighten the set screw down so it makes a mark on the shaft, then drill a little dimple in the shaft where that mark is. You won't have it move then.

I just use the split lock collars, they're way better lol.

Yeah i can get them for 2 bucks a piece a tsc ( not split collars) . they hold up very well , never had any issues.

Yeah yeah you Americans... Not so easy as a Canadian as they come to about 5$ each and they don't really exist on ebay.

I thought Canada only made oil and maple syrup lol. I think they import everything else.

Well I can confirm that maple syrup and pancakes are good over here. But on the west coast there is a lot of forestry and oil a little more inland.

Here's the weld on hub that I made on the lathe welded onto the old sears sprocket. I finally got around to picking up the new foote and tomorrow I want to oil fill it and I have a few questions. Can you leave some of the old grease that is in between the bearings on or will it make a bad slush type thing? What kind of oil should I use and do I need to make little valve or something on top to fill it with oil? I am planning on just using some permatex type gasket stuff.

I made a thread about cleaning my foote. I also swapped out the bushing input for bearings and added an oil seal. Grease should be fine with the oil.

Bah, it will just increase the thickness.

Ok I was just cleaning the gears this morning and looking for chipped ones and stuff. I only found one so I took it out of the parts foote. The rest looks good and fresh but when I was putting it back together I was using this diagram that somebody gave me and I got confused.


It might be kinda hard to see but part number 6 in the bottom right of the diagram has those slots for the gear selector slider. I got confused because the foot does not have a gear on that axle with those slots and I forget how to put it back together. Is it a mistake in the diagram or do I just not know what I am doing. I kinda forget how it goes together so help would be appreciated. Another thing is is that when I compress the springs on that shaft all together, part number 6's key falls out. Is it normal?
