MTD off-road build (Mobile Terrain Dominator) "2"

Hahaha, well Rich surprisingly enough I haven't made a lick of progress on that particular project.

Darn haha. Better get on that lol.

Haha maybe, if I can come up with a cool new way to do it.

Hey Rich! That's a brilliant idea!!!!

Well I tackled a bunch of little odds and ends today.

First I took my fenders off becasue I wanted to add a crossbrace or two to the back of my frame.





Just used a couple pieces of rebar for two of them, should work well.





Then some 1/2" round stock with a 90* bend at the frame.





Felt sturdier during the flex test for sure. I can have in front tire come right off the ground and the frame feels fine.

Also I noticed my seat rest was broken so I welded it back up, then I added a couple little braces for good measure.





Got a piece of rubber for the battery to sit on as well



And all put back together!



Then I made up some simple, easily removable upper coil retainers.



Should be more convienient.

Last thing I did was fab up a new, much nicer, and stronger shifter.





Definitely better! Still gotta bend up the end and put my neat looking shifter knob back on, but I'll do that another time.



Not too bad for a half a day's work! Feels great to have some of this stuff done now. Let me know what ya think!

Thanks Carl! Yeah it sure does, haha. Also yeah, she sees use so often there's not much of a point to wash 'er off too often, haha.

Looking good Allis. Funny how all the little stuff can build up and make you machine a nightmare sometimes. You ever gonna cover the stock shifter hole in the fender?

Thanks Rich! Yeah I plan on re-painting the fenders in the summer sometime, so when I do that I'm gonna clean up the shifter gate a bit and hopefully fill in the FNR shifter too. Not really sure why I didn't do it in the first place, but oh well. Haha.

Also I'm thinking about adding a small emergency fuel tank to this rig, just something I could use to make it home if I find myself out somewhere low on fuel.

Here's what I'm thinkin'



It would be perfect right here. I was thinking some real big zip-ties going all the way around the main fuel tank and strapping the little one to the bottom, that should work good enough.



Fits under the hood no problem.




Then just plumb a line coming from the little tank into the current fuel line with a T-fitting, and have a shut-off somewhere in that short line. Then just simply open it when needed.



Should work fine and be pretty handy. What do you fellas think?

Thanks! Haha, yeah I figured it'd probably be safe to have now that she's got the bigger power plant.

A reserve tank hmmm now that's a good idea.  The one issue I see is since that gas is in a seperate tank I would add some fuel stabilizer to it or periodically run it dry and refil it so you know your reserve gas is nice and fresh.  Did you think about taking a fuel petcock from a quad or trike that has a "on" and "reserve" and adapting it to your tank?  This would be challenging but cool.

Yeah I thought about that as well, but I figured I'd only fill it when I was planning on going for a fairly long trip, that way it hopefully wouldn't just go stale. I actually do have one of those valves from a dirt bike tank lying around, but we'll see. Might just go with "on" and "off" haha.

Thanks CQ, haha. I figured since the opposed has a fuel pump I could pretty much put the tank wherever I want, which is handy.

That is nice. I’m looking to make the swap to v-twin at some point which will free up options. Might see about a small marine tank or something in the.....trans tunnel? I guess that’s what you could call it. Although it wouldn’t be super small, probably like a 3 gallon. I want to have the battery and storage in there too

Yeah that would be neat. Unfortunately with this rig being the flat frame I don't have that option, haha.

Ooooh, the weedwacker tank is a good idea! Don't know why I didnt think of that lol. I was automatically thinking for a capacity of more than a gallon, but it really doesn't need to be that much.

Thanks Rich, haha. Actually it's the old oil revervoir for the hydrostatic trans that used to be in the Jake. It looks identical to a wewd whacker tank though, hahaha.

Oh hahaha. Well nevertheless it gave me the idea!
