What are you going to use for a carb on this thing, Stock? Does it look like the intake manifolds are the same on these 46CI engines as the smaller ones? I know the 40 and 42CI's match up.
I can't imagine they are different. And yea I'm just swapping the 16.5s carb and intake over

The 14hp I have came with an aluminum intake, they common or not really? It's a two piece deal (split along full length) which is glued and bolted together.

Pretty sure thats first gen/blacktop jenk. Probably more expensive to make then the one piecers. But didnt have a efficient way of making them back in the 80s.

Jenk?! More like weight savings. I would clean it up and use it, but I'm making dual carb manifolds.

Beltran customs racing crate engine is ready to be dropped in....

New sump gasket, this paper smells weird.
opposed - Briggs Opposed Build 46ci - Page 5 11077910

Put lapping compounnd on the head and block, and rubbed them together. you can see the high spots in the heads clearly.

Then some RTV copper goo on the heads. Put them on and bearly tightened the bolt. Let it set over a day or so
opposed - Briggs Opposed Build 46ci - Page 5 11074610

Torquing everything up.
opposed - Briggs Opposed Build 46ci - Page 5 11081710

Cleaning the block up with wire wheel in a drill and brake clean. Good enough

Put the stator junk on and plates, then the flywheel. I eyeballed the timing degree, i advanced it 4-6 degrees id say. Then threw tins on
opposed - Briggs Opposed Build 46ci - Page 5 11088110

I also plan on using this plate that holds the fan on, and welding the pull start pulley to it. so its removable.
opposed - Briggs Opposed Build 46ci - Page 5 11077610

And voila!

So if your going to use this for the Pennsylvania 1000, are you going to have head gaskets on hand just in case? I suppose a test run should tell you how well it will work before hand anyway. Should be intresting to see how it works out I think.

Ill have the hole 16.5 on hand. so if anything goes wrong i just swap the engine in and put the intake back on.

Red, have you had any thoughts about converting to a horizontal shaft?

Spare engine...ok, shouldn't be an issue then.

And convert to horizontal? Good grief man! He just built a vertical shaft engine, installed a new trans, and got the belt working again! lol.

That gasket sure is custom. Anyway I may try the no headgasket thing on my 11 horse flatty, let me know how it works cause it sure is easier than shaving down the heads with some glass and lapping compound. Did you remove the governor? What did you do to the cam if anything, and for the timing advance did you just not use a flywheel key?

Someone said they didn't even "deck" the block and head, and have the copper goo on and it works. I'll see. For sure bumps compression. No cam mods, gov removed internally, and no flywheel key. I put lapping compound on the crank and put thre flywheel on, spin the wheel around for 5 min so it makes that much better of a fit, wipe it clean and torque that son of a bi*ch down to 150ft - lbs.

I think it's totally possible, got a horizontal briggs in my junkyard I can take the plates and sump, intake and other things off of. But this is a new engine for my MTD, so not going to convert it.

Thanks for the tip on the lapping compound, never heard that before. How you liking those craftsman torque wrenches? I bought a chinese 1/2" drive one off craigslist for 5 bucks and it stopped clicking.

You'll also need to drill a hole for the dipstick, plug the old hole and swap the oil slinger I think.

Don't you think he is capable? lol!

I have a few oppys that would be more useful converted over horizontal. Id kinda like to see someone else do it before I try and I go and mess it up. lol

Ive seen it done with a 3.5hp briggs, just havnt seen it done to a oppy.
I suppose it would be a good opportunity for some custom intake manifolds and dual carbs.

Ehh, maybe Ill try it this summer or fall.

Dagum, if I had access to a horizontal oppy I take it in a heartbeat...

I mean, i can sell you all the parts to convert if you'd like. I mean, if your payed. because ripping a engine apart isnt super easy in the junkyard.

Cranks might be shorter too, because a sump area isnt there.

If I had the $$$$....

I think those parts would be good to have on hand, stashed away, the whole engine even. If only to get running and sell off. What Ive seen around here, horizontal shaft engines sell for much more than vertical shaft engines.
