The Craftsman build

Time is freeing up for me now so its time to get back at this.  

Nothing has been touched on this since my last post (over a year ago), so i need to pickup where i left off.  
#1: I need to dig it out of the corner of the garage and blow the dust off.
#2: Got some work to do to the rims then sand blast them.
#3: Need to make some front hubs for the 110mm bolt pattern.
#4: Reinforce front axle beam then rebuild it.
#5: Sand blast the front axle beam and mount.
#6: Assemble front with tires on to see if tires clear all objects at full turns.
#7: Make rear wheel spacers to equal up footprint with front.
#8: Finish up front winch mount.
#9: Make rear winch mount.
#10: Get a motor for it.

This list is just a start there is more to do after all this gets done.

Got a few things done to this over the last couple of years but not a hole lot.  I'm going to be finding my pics and posting them soon.

Every so often I think of what happened to this it the allis, nice to see you ain't dead. Looking forward to some pics

Still have em both but haven't done much to them, that's the problem with my little projects they get pushed to the side when life gets busy.

Well i did a little work to this over the weekend, wasnt much but it was something. Been over 4 years since i worked on it.

Long story short i needed to move it from my old house to the new one, so i finished up mounting the front axle mounting plate to my frame i made (if that made any sense).  
I had to cut a little bit of my frame out to make it sit flat and drill the six holes for bolting it down. When i was loading everything up i saw my todo list it said about making some inch spacers for under the axle plate.  I did some measuring and i do have to put a inch spacer under it to level the frame out so all the notching i did was not needed.

Wait till i revive my allis build , i started collecting parts in 06 for it. Man its 12 years in the makings and havent touched it in atleast 5 years.  

I want to have this craftsman up and going this summer so i can use it around the yard. Plus i need to empty out my other garage and try and sell the house this year, this August will make two years that ive been out of there.

Man that sounds sweet!  Can't wait to see that come alive!

Another Long story short- I finally got my old house on the market (for sale),  now I finally have my time.
 I've been spending every evening working over there since the end of June and I haven't got to touched this build since I hauled it home on my last post.
In the last post I notched the frame to fit the front axle mounting plate.
The next day I went over and bolted the rear and front end in, put wheels and tires on, put steering shalf in, and bolted the rear fenders on. Basically had to make it a steerable roller to haul it home.
When i got home i rolled it up onto my lifting table and that's where it's been since.  
So here is how it sits today, same as six months ago






So I need some input. How / what should I run for a motor. I got a 20hp v twin vertical shalf- it's used and its smokes bad  or I got an opposed 18hp horizontal that sit rotated 90* in it (crank is pointing back at you) and that motor needs work as well. Or my final option buy a 670cc and run the crank straight out the side like it really should be?


Let me know what you think is the best way to go.

Wow, this build looks great! What trans does this have? Personally I'd go with the 20hp V twin, and if the trans has a horizontal input you can run a twisted belt or RAGB.

Trans is the stock 3speed high/low.

The 20 hp is a vertical shalf, it sitting on a craftsman just like this but with a green body. It uses a different style of belt twist then the opposed  motor one I got.
But thats the thing i got both styles of belt twist setup to make either motor work  but both motors need rebuilt.  If I'm willing to spend $ on getting motors rebuilt why not buy a 670cc  and have a new motor. Only thing with that is if I run the 670 I'd turn it 90*and just straight shot the pulleys with each other to delete the belt twist. All that would take is a little fab work and thats not a big deal, just cost a little more in the long run then rebuilding a motor.

IDK about the 670.  It's a ton of power and the engines aren't the greatest and parts are harder to get for it.

How about a 10hp Tillotson?  It's a 212cc clone rated for 10 hp and it's on sale for $180 right now.

If he went with a 212, just get a predator for 125 bucks. Parts are EVERYWHERE

I'd rebuild the V twin with new rings. Run a belt twist to a jackshaft and pull the motor forward to tighten the belt with no idlers and put the clutch on the jackshaft to trans input belt.

A 212 is out of the picture unless I'm stuffing 3 of them under the hood

Does that motor actually have an oil cooler on it, or just the pic?

Prancstaman - yes it does, however the 708cc vertical shalf model they sell does not have an oil cooler on it.

How's this build coming along? I've been wanting to see someone put a horizontal shaft in kne of these Craftsmans.

Let's just say very slow. Ha ha

As soon as I get my welding table build done (hoping to have final video posted early next week) I need to play cleanup in the garage for a couple days. After that I plan on getting back on it. So I'm thinking beginning of March unless something else pops up.

Well garage is somewhat cleaned up, so now im back on the craftsman.

I went ahead and gathered up rest of the body parts and went ahead an loosely  assembled it.





First thing that I need to do is take the hood back off and remove the heat sheilds that are bolted to it. Then bolt the motor plate back to the frame.  The new motor needs to be sat inside the engine bay to make sure it fits and clears everything. If it fits good then I can get the final placement of the motor marked out on the plate, drill it and bolt the motor down.
