| Hi Have fitted a new starter on my Westwood gazelle MII when I try to start it wont turn the starter over as it gets caught on the flywheel. Are there different size teeth on some starters how do I know if i have a match please? | |

| The tooth pitch look alright from here. Frankly, you can see better that I can, 'cause you're staring at it, while I get a pic. Now- while I'm still unsure on the metal/plastic think mentioned above, I DO know that there were a few different starter body lengths, and a couple of different Bendix drive designs. I see that you currently have the "snap-ring" style. Perhaps you originally had the "roll-pin" style.
If you REALLY play with it, can you see what's hanging? Could you (maybe) shim between the starter and the block to gain a wee bit of clearance? | |

| I am referring to two distinct styles of the Bendix drive mechanism on Briggs starters. I do NOT know for sure if they are interchangeable. If you look at your starter's pinion gear, it is held on with a snap ring or circlip. There's another type that is retained with a roll pin, and it looks different. While the actual retaining method makes no difference from a functional perspective, I cannot help but wonder if the shaft length or diameter might be different, or the effective throw, or something that may cause your issue. | |
