| Briggs made some great engines. And some sh*t ones, too. For that matter, Tecumseh had some great engines, too. But I'll take a Honda GX series over just about anything. | |

| They all have good and bad points about them. We run Briggs because they are plentiful and cheap. They last good enough for us, typically get about 5 or 6 years of abuse out of them.
Haven't had but one fail where it would not run. Ran an old 11hp for 45 min, wide open throttle, no governor, and the only reason it stopped was it ran out of oil. It was smoking before we started.

One of these days, somebody's going to have to explain to me precisely WHY they think Tec engines "suck". I have never had a problem with a Tec that I haven't seen in other engines. All I ever get is "well, I heard something, or this guy said something. Prove it! Or, "I had one that was junk"... That's crap. The only Tec issue that presents itself somewhat regularly is the fact that some models of carbs are a bit more sensitive to gumming from stale fuel. So... What? Here's what- If people would maintain their junk according to the manual (see: Storage), this would not be a problem!!! Now, here's some food for thought- I have a late '70's H60 with a Series 1 carb in a go kart. The engine is bone stock with the governor removed. I punish that sucker, capping around 5400 RPM with ZERO issues. Crap? I think not! Rant over. Thank you! LOL

| Personally I don't think they suck... well not the flat heads anyway. I do dislike the ohv Tecumseh engines however and that IS from experience. Every OHV tec motor Ive had was junk after just trying to get it to do what my Briggs will do day in and day out. Light over-revs, burst runs and a lot of throttle twitching. The flat heads make good track race motors though, the short stroke and larger bore vs the Briggs of equivalent HP will make it seem much snappier. Only downside to this is the tecumseh seem to be really touchy to throttle area adjustments and especially those of the governor.
My 5 cents worth

| Never had a Tec flathead, so I can't judge them, but hate the OHVs tho | |

| I've lost 2 of the old cast iron 10hp tec's, due to rod failure. I don't really blame them, they were abused, and the first one lasted a while.
I've also had a almost brand new 10hp tec fail twice in a generator(less than 50 hours) First time the governor broke, and sent the rpms high, blew about all the electronics in the house.
Second time it ran out of oil(friend was using it), low oil shutdown failed, and the motor locked. It would run out of oil before it ran out of gas(7 gallon gas tank).
Engine was always extra loud, sounded like it was coming apart.
After that I bought a OHV kohler command pro 10hp to replace it. It sounds and runs much better than the old engine.
So yea, I'd saw that particular tecumseh was junk.
Main reason I use briggs is because they are cheap and plentiful.
