So, what should I do with this thing?

My Auto teacher got three brand new Honda GXV340s from Burlington Technical Institute for free when he went there back in the middle of winter, and they were prizes fr the three highest testers in our State finals. Well I was one of those lucky persons, so now I have a brand new Honda engine. Its never been run, I actually just barely cut the tape on the box to examine the inside.

Now here is where I am looking for opinions. I am already pretty decided what I want to do with it, but I want some 3rd party input.

Keep in mind this is just the engine. It doesnt have an exhaust or anything, so I will need to make one.

1.) I keep the engine and use it. This is a 100% genuine Honda engine and will last forever. Its only an 11 horse, but the technology in this thing makes it insanely efficient. If I do use it, it will go on the GT as its red and matches.

2.) I sell it. This is a $600-$800 engine, and I should have no problems selling it for $500. Profits will go to a vehicle.

3.) Keep it around, in hopes that something more deserving comes along.

4.) Keep it around, and try selling it if/ when I move to PA (more chances of getting what I ask as its more metropolitan).


So lemme know what you guys think. Im thinking of just selling it for the cash so I can buy a truck. Plus the thing is brand new, I dont really want to beat on it. Its too pretty.

I'd sell it. Also, those 'Performance curves' are complete bull.

To clear things up a bit- The Honda GX(V) 340 is known as an 11bhp net engine, and was marketed as such for years. Within the last couple of years, the government has started cracking down on small engine HP claims, and is re-regulating test methodology. This is why you may have seen something to indicate 8.9hp instead of 11. Some manufacturers have even dropped HP claims entirely, instead choosing to market their engines (especially push mowers) according to the peak torque spec. Peak torque numbers tend to be a bit higher that net BHP, and therefore sounds tastier to the consumer.

Meanwhile, the Honda GX series are amongst the very best in OPE engines. I would take one over a Briggs, Tecumseh, and most others any day of the week!

I would keep it for a future or current project, but that is just me...

Im thinking ill keep it around for now. I have the Kohler 14 ill put on the GT, but ill bring the Honda down to PA with me. Who knows, maybe ill find another GT or  Ford or something.
