| Anyway, I picked up a basket case Allis Chalmers (Simplicity?) 616 with an Onan twin cyl engine. A few things are missing: the oil cooler, gas tank, exhaust and air cleaner, and the left side brake is stuck. After cleaning the points and giving it a splash of gas it fired (on the bench), seems tight so I figure it's worth fixing up. After checking the engine it seems it's not the original. the cover is from the original 16.5 hp engine, its been hacked around the starter to clear it. So if anybody is familiar with these Onan twins, this one has "Onan 170-2214" cast on the top of the block, and Ser# 347980 stamped to the left of that. Thanks for any help you can give!! | |

| I'm guessing an Onan CCKA, 49.8ci 16.5 HP? I think the original was a CCK of similar specs. | |

| I would love to help, but unfortunately my extreme jealousy is blocking any info I would normally share....
Haha, seriously though, congrats on finding that tractor. She's a beaut.
Anyway, that tractor should've had a C series Onan in it I believe, like a CCKB or what have you. Judging by the pictures I'd say the reason the shroud was cut up is because of that solenoid-shift starter. I don't think that is an original style starter and that would be why the shroud was clearanced, meaning that engine most likely is the original mill.
Glad to hear you got it to run, I'd be sure to check the valve clearances on that before it goes back in the tractor, as they need to be checked fairly regularly on those Onans. | Thanks for the tips, the person (kid, abt 18 or 20) I got this from said he couldn't get it to start and tore it down with the idea of repowering it with a B&S Vanguard engine from a Cub Cadet. When he found out there was a problem with engine rotation he just gave up and parked it. I don't know if he knew anything about points or not, but after checking for stuck or out of adjustment valves we cleaned/gaped the points and it fired on the first rotation. This is just what we need around my house, the arthritis in my hips keeps me from using a walk behind tiller anymore, moving up to a small tractor will make our gardening chores a hell of a lot easier. | |
