| Welcome to the forum Jay! Make yourself at home! Building an off-road tractor with your son sounds like a great idea, maybe you could start up a build thread with some pictures. That'd make it easier for us to give you advice and what not. | Welcome!
It's fairly easy to build a cheap mud mower for a kid. The biggest expense is usually tires. Do you have a tractor to start with yet. I think something like a LT series craftsman would be a good candidate. I'm looking forward to the build thread.

Yeah green or grey craftsmans are pretty common/cheap, I usually keep an eye out all the time for used atv tires for 8" or 12" rims, so I normally spend more getting a tractor. Find one that has a engine that will run or running.

| Welcome to ATLTF... Father/son build sounds great! I was actually thinking of doing a Dad/Daughter build later this summer! Personally, I browse craigslist all the time looking for cheap parts.... maybe a family member with an old lawn tractor parked behind their shed to you can take to get rid of it for them. Most people here like Craftsmans here now, but dare I say some Murray are easy to work with too. How old is your son? If you want to make things go faster, look for a tractor with a 5 or 6 speed transaxle, either on the fender or just in front of the seat. Those can be pulley swapped. If you do want to go faster down the line, stay away from anything that says Automatic or Hydro"something" | |
