I always wanted to buy one of these, and finally did. It is a 5212.5 with the mowing deck, in reasonable shape. It has a 12.5hp opposed twin/hydro. Does not run (yet), and the wiring is questionable, but ill work it out hopefully. Has no spark at the moment. 60bucks.
I still see people selling them for decent money considering its 30 years old.
So I have had this 16hp v-twin broadmoor for a while now, finally got it in the garage, fixed the starter gear & got it to run, but it smokes like a chimney.... check it out... to me it looks like the pass side head gasket is blown like hell... Smoke is not coming out of the exhaust it appears to come out of the bottom of the head...also at least 3 dead mice in this engine...
either way im gonna do both head gaskets and clean the carbon... what you think?

One quick idea.. are you sure it's oil smoke? There's a small chance a mouse nest could be burning away in there somewhere.
thanks the simplicity is trashed (bad hydro), but im using the motor for something else... no i am not certain about that yet... I guess I cannot verify that till i get all the tins off and clean out everything...
it is the same as most i have seen, and has not had the tins of in a very long time..... I am gonna finish taking off the tins tomorrow, the v-twin engines have so much more crap to take off than anything else.

Isn’t that a vanguard? I’m pretty sure from seeing the valve covers.
Sounds like a nice motor to save. It does sound like a blown head gasket to me
yeah vanguard v-twin is the model, but it looks like blown HG to me.....its allot of smoke. I had the carb apart and it was the cleanest I have seen out of all the junk I have had sitting for a long time...

The non-vanguard OHVs and twins love to blow headgaskets. I've changed a few myself, but I haven't really heard anything bad about the vanguards so I'm curious as to what you find.

yeah im gonna check it out tonight, they make it so complicated to get all the parts wires and pieces off of these motors to get to the damn engine. I could change the HG in any single cyl twice before getting the tins off this motor.

damn I finally finished taking stuff apart, and turns out it was packed full of dirt and flamable material all around the exhaust..... Took off all the tins etc, blew it all out and no smoke... pretty funny....
I finally got my 5212 to run but I have massive white smoke & running weak so that is another project I have to keep working at....
Picked up this poulan today, amazingly nothing wrong with it other than flat tires and needing oil change/clean up etc.... never had one before but it looks like a craftsman with a ugly hood.
Good deal on that Poulan. Normally when I get a deal like that I'll put whatever money I didn't use on getting it to work into stuff like the seat, or the lights. You know, unimportant stuff like that.

yeah i dont have a seat for it but I had a deflector chute for the deck, and tires to replace the bald ones, so that will be enough for me to get it out of here and not mess with it too much.... its a turd for the most part, not worth putting allot of effort in...... the murray either, really but im annoyed the ignition or solenoid is bad,.....
Oh no big deal, that's just one of those hit 'n miss style atmospheric valves.
yeah I cranked it over a few times and there was a crazy noise coming from the one side.....valve guide came loose and whoever owned it didnt sell with the pushrod/rocker arm parts so ill have to come up with them to even see if the engine starts.

It'll be fine . Try it how it is. I've got a 20HP V-Twin that was running on 1 cylinder and I didn't know it up until we pulled 1 spark plug boot off and it ran fine. Pulled the other one off, nothin'. Fuel valve rod fell off. It should start on 1 cylinder.

IT Made a few puffs on the other cyl but it makes a horrific miss noise with the one valve being closed. Maybe I can find the parts or a used head on ebay.
got a call on a stx 38 yesterday, its beat to hell, but engine, hood and deck are ok....just the hoods are worth 80-100 bucks around here, and I need the engine...
This was tough to load up because the rear tires were flat when I drug it in the truck, but I tied a strap around the front axle, stood in the bed of the truck & another guy just pushed from behind. Worked out ok...
