Maybe it does have a bad air like after the intake somewhere? I'd spray carb clean all over the carb and intake while it was running and see if it bogs down. If it does you know there's an air leak.

A gasket leak would make sense. If it’s running rich and more air is getting introduced it would be like revving it up. It would equal out the fuel mixture and everything too. Hmmmm...
