Did a little engine work today.

Need to get me a couple new bolts to put my fan extended on and I'm going to add a pull-start pulley to the top.

So i was the one who put it on my oppy and now your doing it too lol. What year is that engine? looks older than what comes on junky-td's .

Trust me, I'm not pulling a copy job.  I have no Idea what year the engine is.  It was missing the tin with the serno, type, etc.  If I was a guessing man, I would say early 80's?  83ish maybe?

My fan came from the original engine from the 90 Craftsman GT I have.  I plan on using the old drive pulley too.

That thing is gonna be tall with that drive pulley up top.

Yeah, I know. I'm hoping I can do both pulleys. If not, I will stick with the fan one. (Yellow) It will do what I need.

Planned Murray front axle is a no go without severe mods, going to try the craftsman front axle. It is much heavier and about 3-4 inches wider.

Yeah , murray front ends are junk. stamped together with 14guage steel ,,,........ the one i pulled of off a pan frame was in a slight u shape because of how bent it was.

Plan for the day, get the old pivot plate ground off and mock up the location of the axle,  I hope to get that on soon so I can get the engine off the stand and mounted.

Input pulley seal still dripping oil.  Grr...  It's so high, I'm not worried about running out of oil.  I'll let it drip down and see if it stops.  The amount I put in was a bit more than it had even though it was the spec amount.

I'm pretty happy with the craftsman axle.  I'll continue with it.


Note to self. This thing is pretty heavy steel. When I cut the pivot brace off it fell on my foot and that hurt pretty bad. LOL

Looks to be a pretty exciting build...like the looks of the tires. Is it just me or are the rears HUGE?

Those rear tires look great mighty! Especially with the the fronts mocked up too.

I have a couple of ideas mighty. Is that your final ride height in the front? I figured that you'd want it higher like that to give yourself room for front suspension. If that's the case I would do a little bit of lift in the rear to level the frame out.

Secondly, that transaxle has a horizontal input shaft. I know you already have your motor picked out but you'd get some serious points in my book if you modified the driveline and converted to a horizontal shaft engine. It would be pretty easy since you already have the frame stripped down. Once you have the belt drive figured out you can just build the body work around it. I haven't seen a conversion like this yet so it would be pretty unqiue.

I did find the right angle gearbox finally for "some versions" of the machine (cheapest $180).  Like I mentioned before, mine has a secondary hand brake feature that makes having the gearbox pointless as it is run across the belt hole in the frame.

Also, I am not concerned with the nose up a bit.  With this style Murray it would look pretty mean.  But I do feel it will be a bit more level once the Opposed is on there.  I'm only going for a few inches of flex to take out some of the "bumps".  Not building a fully articulated machine to rock climb.

As for a horizontal engine?  It would look totally wrong with they style of hood I have.  Also, I would have to cut quite a large slit down my frame to accommodate the belt.  I would rather not mess with the integrity of the frame.

Makes sense to me. We each have our own way we like to build tractors. I'm looking forward to seeing how your build progresses along.

I agree with leaving the vertical shaft engine in, especially since the hood already has cut outs for the cylinder heads of the opposed. Also, for what's it's worth I think a little bit of nose height makes some machines look more intimidating. Not sure why but I've always liked that look, hahaha.

Yeah I like the nose up a bit too! We'll see if it stays that way.

What are those hubs you are using for the front wheels? Did you make them? Buy them?
